My hp pavilion a820n desktop wont turn back on after a power outage. there is a blinking green light on the back just under the power cord. tried other outlets. called hp support and went through steps that included unplugging the harness on the motherboard and hard driive, holding power button for three minutes and switching to the 230v for 10 minutes. no joy. any suggestions?

havent tried the battery, but will do so. the fan does nothing when plugged up, but there is a ticking sound with the blinking light. ticking sound is in the area where the power supply is.

well, it turned out to be the power supply. i took it to a local guy and he diagnosed it for me. i decided that it was time to upgrade computers(mines almost 5 years old) so i'm having him build me a new one. thanks for all the help and comments. i did learn a thing or two here.

When the power is turned on to the computer, do you get any fan movement or other lights besides the one coming on by the power cable?

Have you tried taking out the bios battery (small flat type) from the motherboard?

If nothing else turns on besides that first light on the outside, that along with the ticking noise makes me thing that the problem is with your power supply. If you call a small local PC repair shop (if you have one where you live), many of them have the ability to plug in another power supply and can tell you in 5 minutes whether it's the power supply or not, and can sell you a new one on the spot for a decent price.

Taking out the battery resets the settings on the bios for the motherboard.

worked for me on the few computers that wont turn on.

If it starts up, you may need to enter dates etc onto the bios.

I never thought of the power supply unit till i saw Sdrabor comments. I think he is on the right track considering it happened after a power outage.

Green light on my power supply stays lit after unplugging

Usually the light will time out after the capacitor has drained. Your machine is getting a bit old , your PSU may be the problem. If you plug it in and push the on/off button and it blinks, fans spin and shuts down, it's most likely the PSU. Look for a in-line fuse on the Motherboard, if blown, replace. Look at the motherboard closely for damaged components, capacitors, etc.

You have a bad power supply. It is not an expensive fix. Remember HP's take HP power supplies. When ordering either look on ebay for your model or order from part supplier.

Green power supply light blinking? HP Pavilion a820n

These wires vary based on the type of the board each wire lead is labeled to coorespond with the pins on the board. You need to reference the manual for your specific motherboard. If you don't have the original get it from the vendor support site or just google it. Unless your motherboard is an odd brand it should be easy to find.
