External Hard Drive not recognized

Try another usb cable if that works. But if nothing, make sure if your hard drive can be found in device manager and see if it has a correct capacity. If both doesn't work at all, you have to remove the hard drive to it's case and insert into the pc directly but that might void your warranty. I have a broken Toshiba laptop, [the battery died]..and I have photos stored on it..is it possible to retrieve the photos?.. I also have a new Toshiba laptop...please help??

I don't think you lose data because battery is dead. Data is on your HD. Why don't you connect it to power supply and see if the old laptop is really working.

My Toshiba px1394u-3g50 external hard drive is not working, light flashing and not recognised

Try connecting the hard drive to some other laptop and see if its getting recognized. Issue could be either with the hard drive itself of it could be with the usb port which you are using to connect the hard drive to your laptop.

I got an old laptop and I bought a new toshiba laptop I just wanna ask how do I transfer my application and files from my old laptop to a new one using external hardrive, also wat external hardrive, and also...

Hi,
You can transfer the data files only from the old laptop to the new one. You cannot transfer the installed applications/software. Software are required to installed again on the new laptop afresh.
To transfer the data you can use external portable hard disk, which can be connected to the PC using any USB port (just like pen drive) and you can copy - paste the required data to the external disk just like you copy data from one partition to another. After copying the required data, you can connect the external drive to new laptop and copy the data to the new laptop. You can use external drive of any brand/ capacity. However, it is better to have an external drive with larger capacity, so that you can transfer the data in one go.

Hope it helps! Good Luck! Thanks for using Fixya!

My toshiba external hard drive was not recognized on my mac, it is not on my finder either.

External USB hard drives can be used to exchanged data between Windows PC/laptop and MACs, but the external hard drive MUST be formatted with a PC or laptop in FAT32 not NTFS.

I have a toshiba satellite laptop A135 series and it won't recognize my toshiba external hard drive. However, the drive works fine with my HP

This can be an issue with the USB port, or the drivers.
Is the hard drive a Power HDD ? that means it has 2 usb chords one for power and one for data transfer? coz those might not work with laptops, also has it ever worked with the laptop ?
Thanks

Hard drive not recognized

1. your hard drive may have come to what is call "end of life" cycle
2. You didn't designate if you have a internal / or USB drive.
3. If this is an IDE ( internal Drive) then you will have to enter the PC cabinet to check.
4. IF this is a USB drive some time the electronic controller board is malfunctioning and will not transfer data from the processor on the data board to the USB cable.
5. If it is USB the usb cable it self is damaged due to strain at the strain relief.
6.The PC Mother board may have lost it's ability to recognize the hard drive.

My PC is not recognizing my WD Passport 120GB USB external drive. I used just few days ago and connected the usb cable to my computer and the WD Passport drive and not recognized on my 2 laptop and 2 other...

I have the 80GB WD passport and it suddenly stopped working one day.  The unit lights up but nothing else.  Finally I cracked the case open and found, as I suspected, that the drive is simply a SATA laptop drive with a SATA-to-USB conversion card built in.  I suspected that the card was **** so I disconnected it and used a USB hard drive adapter (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=3770&name=USB_Hard_Drive_Adapter) and I can read/write to the drive just fine.  Best part is that the adapter I use has its own power supply so I'm not pulling juice through the USB cable for a SATA drive.
Even though mine "works" again I don't recommend these drives to anyone.  They're just not sturdy enough or well designed.
