Question about KitchenAid KAWS850L Top Load Washer

Pump Replacement for Washer??

I have a Kitchenaid KAWS850JQ3 washing machine that is no longer draining or spinning. I do not feel it is the lid switch because it does click when I close the lid and it makes a humming sound like it is trying but it can't. I have checked the hoses and it fills fine and drains manually through the hose. Do you agree it is most likely the pump? It appears this is a belt-less drive unit so no belts to check. Also do you have instructions (hopefully with pictures) on how to remove the base cabinet to get to the pump?
Thanks for any and all help you can give!

I am not yet sure tipping it back will work for me because it feels like there is a piece of heavy felt uner it but I will give it a go. Is there a way for me to know for sure it is the pump without replacing it?

    Thanks for the help!

Thank you so much Vic...I removed the pump, found a small nylon sock (won't do THAT again) removed it and all is well. I appreciate all your help as this has saved me a costly repair or a new washer when mine was not quite 8 years old.

    Have a great evening!

Hi, It does sound like something might be in the pump. You might be able to rremove the pump by tipping the washer against the wall and removing the clips off the pump and hoses to release it from the motor. Here is the instructions to remove the cabinet to get to the pump if the first idea doesn't work. Normal 0 Removing the cabinet. UNPLUG the washer. There are two screws holding the control panel to the cabinet. Most models the screw are in front but, some models have the screws in back. They are on each end. Now raise the control panel up and let it rest on the hinges. Unplug the lid switch harness and locate the clips on each side (bronze in color) and release them.
Now the cabinet will lift off the frame and you can set it aside.
Make sure that the front lip of the cabinet slips under the rail of the frame. Ease the cabinet on the frame making sure the two rear sides of the cabinet set down on the tabs of the frame. Put the two clips back on that hold the cabinet and plug the lid switch back in. Fasten the control panel down and you are all set.
I hope this helps you. Please let me know if I can assist you further.

The felt piece will come off without much effort. When you take the pump off, Look inside and see ifthere is anythind locking it up. Items possibly in the pump are: Sock, nail, underwire for a bra, & even rug backing. Just some ideas.

Once you remove the pump, you can set the washer back down and try it in spin cycle only. See if the tub spins.

    Does this help?

The machine wont spin

The most common cause of the problem you are experiencing is a lid switch malfunction. Symptoms may include, filling and stopping on the intial fill cycle, a wash tub that will not drain, and stopping right after the wash cycle and not advancing to rinse or spin cycles.

The lid switch is usually mounted under the washer top casing, on the right hand side on most top load models. It is activated by a plastic piece on the lid (called a "Lid Strike") through a small hole on the rim of the wash tub opening. In many cases the lid strike breaks off the lid, or the lid switch becomes loose and no longer makes contact. Inspect the lid to make sure the lid strike is still intact, and then inspect the mounting screws (adjacent to the small opening on the wash tub rim) and make sure they are snug. If you determine the switch to be defective, the following link explains how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3557193-replacing_a_lid_switch

On some models, the lid switch is located under the top casing by one of the lid hinges. You will know if you if you have this type of switch, because It does not have a lid strike and the small hole on the right hand side of the wash tub will not be present. This switch is actuated (toggled) by a rod on the lid hinge. With this type of switch, if you locate it and it can be toggled by hand, you may only need to adjust the actuator by bending it slightly.

NOTE: You do not have to drain or bail the water from the washer tub to perform this repair. Once a defective lid switch is replaced, the washer should drain normally.

A replacement lid switch (if required) can be purchased at any of the following web sites:

searspartsdirect.com
pcappliancerepair.com
appliancepartspros.com
repairclinic.com

The average price is about $20 - $30 if you perform the repair yourself. Prices differ between sites so shop and compare. If the model number you posted this question under is correct, the part number for a replacement switch is 3949247.

If you have questions, or need additional assistance, please post back and let me know. The lid switch is a very simple repair that you can easily perform without the assistance of a repairman.

Kenmore series 90 washing machine will not spin or drain

I hate to say it, but your friend is probably wrong on this one. A bad pump would not affect a washer's ability to spin. It would only affect the drain function. If the washer fills and doesn't do anything, or stops right after the wash cycle and then does not advance to the rinse cycle and drain, this is commonly caused by a lid switch malfunction. If you determine the switch to be defective, the following link explains how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385198-replacing_lid_switch

If the switch requires replacement, a new one can be purchased on line at searspartsdirect.com, pcappliancerepair.com, repairclinic.com, appliancepartspros.com. Just use your model number as your search criteria. All these sites offer competitive pricing, so shop all them for the best price.

If you have questions, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

Spins when it feels like it

Popcorn, sounds like you are having trouble with the lid switch. The plastic housing in which the screws hold the switch to the cabinet may have cracked, or came loose. If the lid switch is not making correct contact the result is no spin, no drain. The switch actuator on the lid itself may need adjustment. The lid switch is mounted to the cabinet on the back right side under the consol. The lid switch part number is 8054980. But check the actuator first. Catriver..post back.
