Question about Whirlpool 21.0 cu. ft. Top Freezer Refrigerator with IceMagic Plus Ice Maker

Compressor too hot to touch

Have a 35 year old Whirlpool. The compressor is too hot to touch. My finger will burn if it is touching for a full second. However, the refrigerator and freezer are fine temperature-wise and the fan is running. The compressor is obviously running (I feel vibrations before it got too hot to touch.) I've had it on for the last hour and it has not cycled off but I've also had it completely off for 4 days because I'm afraid of a fire. The vinyl floor under the compressor has been discolored (I assume due to the heat). I have also cleaned the coils under the unit. What can the problem be? How do you fix it? Is it time for a new one?

Yes, the fan is running when the compressor is running. How can the compressor be worn out if it's still running and cooling efficiently? Can it be clogged somewhere where I can't get to it?

Just make sure that all fans are running when the compressor is working. The compressor is a real fine built model to be 35 years old. The problem with machines and people, they just tend to wear out. If that refrigerator is something you want to keep and the compressor is worn out I would consider replacing the compressor. But the cost may not be something you would want to pay. I do this a lot and usual charge for parts, labor and warranty is $300.00
Hope you well on that Whirlpool!
Thanks, Sea Breeze

There are other possibilities. The start capacitor and start relay are not working well, for example bad contacts or connections. The compressor over time wears inside the motor begins to spin and on the ends of the shaft the bearings become worn. All this gets trapped in the discharge filter on the high side of compressor restricting flow and creates back pressure that helps heat the compressor. I am surprised that the compressor does not shut down due to the extreme heat. Sea Breeze

Sub Zero 700 suddenly stops after 12 years. Compresser is burning hot.

The compressor will normally be 100 to 110 degrees. I would suspect the thermostat or mouse damage in the freezer area. Also, if you keep it overstocked, to the point of poor air circulation, you could just have ice blockage. Put the frozen food in a styrofoam cooler or a good heavy corrugated box and give the unit a good full defrosting.

Not getting cold enough on the inside... the exterior too hot to touch.. why could this be?

Compressor relay could be fried. Feel the compressor. If it is too hot to touch then check your relay. The relays contacts could be welded together making bot windings stay powered up and overheating the compressor causing compressor shutdown on overload.

the compressor will run hot,but you should be able to touch it without burning yourself.(when you compress a gas, heat is generated as it turns to liquid and when it expands back to a gas it absorbs heat, the principal of a fridge...)

The panel between the freezer and refrigerator heats up - too hot to touch for a while then cools off again. GD5SHAXLT01

You need to clean the coils under the front of the refrig of dust , lint , pet hair , etc . Pull the refrig out and remove the back panel covering the compressor . Make sure the fan there , next to the compressor is working . Usually , if this fan is not working , the center strip gets very hot , and the compressor may cut off , from getting too hot . The compressor can burn out , if the fan doesn't work for a while .

Compressor very hot on Kenmore 7.5 c.f. upright freezer. It is too hot to touch and smells like burning paint, but stayed cold inside. Wondering if this is a bad compressor and about how much it costs to...

Compressors will normally run hot to the touch, but should not have a burning smell. If the compressor does need to be replaced you would be better off getting a new freezer. Compressor replacement with the labor can run into more than a new freezer.

13 months old Kenmore compressor very hot.

lacdoi,
huuum At your service!

You said,
The warranty just ran out, Sears came out told me needs a control board ($210 for just labor to replace) not sure about part price. I though a new freezer is about twice his labor and parts, so I sent him away minus $65.
I did some troubleshooting today, pull the plug for 2 days. Plug it in, temp alarm goes on all the time. Turn alarm off, left the freezer running for 4hrs.
Not cold at all, some cool air. Fan is on, compressor is on (can hear humming noise and is vibrating). Compressor is very hot to the touch, could burn finger.
Should I call Sears again, wonder how much to fix all the problem? Or just give up, look for another brand new one (not Kenmore).

MY ADVICE:
Sounds like a big repair bill and multiple problems

How old is the appliance?

If the appliance is 10 years old or more you may not be advisable to put good money into bad!
New appliance are so much more efficient today that they can save you a lot of money in energy!!!!
Replace it.

You will be fine

Bless You huuum

Please give me the best rating for my fine advice before you sign off.
Thank you
