I had the same problem with an R51 I own. When I bought it (used), it came with a cheap chinese replacement Ac adapter that made a sizzling noice when plugged in. I noticed that the screen would only act this way when the ac adapter was plugged in. My easy solution was to use an IBM brand adapter with same output config (which I had in my basement from an older laptop). Ever since, no problems. I know this problem is over a year old, so I am posting this solution for those who are google searching this now.

Your wires connecting from your laptop hardware to your display is messed up and is only "re-connected" and "hot-wired" by your action of closing/opening the lid.... use your warranty... your problem is when your warranty is expired so be glad this happened when you still have warranty

The problem with mine was the power adapter. The problem seemed to only occur when I was using the adapter. I replaced it and haven't had the problem since. I had a feeling that it needed replaced since I bought the laptop used and it came with some cheap chinese replacement that sizzled whenever I had it plugged in.

Sounds like the lcd is toast.

Hook the laptop up to an external monitor and see if you get normal video. If you do, chances are it's the lcd. You'll have to replace it.

Screen stays blank when turned on

take your computer to your dealer and send it for repair.

The problem is most likely the inverter for the screen.
actually to see if that is the problem you can try to put bright light to the screen and see if you barely see the picture.

IBM Laptop, Can only see the screen with a flashlight ?

Hi Barry.
You don't have to replace the screen as you can see a fain image on it.
It could be 1 of 3 things, 1st...... the plug that fits into the inverter has worked loose because of opening and closing the lid. 2nd and 3rd, it could be the inverter itself or the inverter coil which is defective.
If your machine is out of warranty and you fancy having a go at this yourself the inverter is located just under the screen behind the bezel (plastic which surrounds the screen) just unscrew the screen, remove the plastic and check the connection to the motherboard and screen.
The inverter looks like an elongated circuit board.

Good luck and please post back if you need anymore assistance.

Blank Screen

First, confirm that it is the screen itself. Connect the video output to a known working monitor and then power on your Thinkpad. if the known working monitor behaves the same way you can rule out the laptop's monitor as the source of the problem. This may be the BGA, Ball Grid Assembly, leadless soldering problem related to video chips on the motherboard, but first test the monitors.

Ablank screen on ibm thinkpad t41 xp pro

I am a computer tech and it sounds like the cable that connects your screen to your computer has come loose, or is going bad.  You will want to open the computer (carefully) which may take a while and please be careful with it and remember where the screws go.  But there are pads on the front of the scrreen take those off and unscrew the screws, and then open it up carefully prying it open with a screwdriver, be careful because the plastic breaks easily.  and then there will be a wire connecting monitor to a port thingy, and then make sure it is snug in there be carefull with this though.  If you put it all back together and it still doesn't work you need to buy a new screen just look up your computer model number and order one off the internet.
