Question about Televison & Video

2 Answers

I have a Tevion DVD player ? Model number TSD-DR40HD. It made a loud noise followed by smoke - but kept working. The only change appeared to be some red lines appearing in the display panel along with the normal display information. The incident did not trip our safety switch or affect any other houshold appliances. Fearing a fire risk we took the unit - just out of the 12 month warrantee) to our local fix it chap and were told no parts were available and the unit ($399 at Aldi 13 mths ago) was therefore useless. The original warrantee company Pebble have apparently gone out of business. Hills (who replaced Pebble)are only supporting units still under warrantee. Question - Are parts available? Is the unit fixable? Who will service the unit at a reasonable charge? Cheers Glenda

Hi, I don't think overheating is the problem - we had already had an issue some months ago when the fan stopped. The fan was replaced and is definitely stillworking - can hear it. The recorder is in a purpose made unit with plenty of space around it - the back and front are open and unimpeded. The actual noise that was produced just before the smoke - was loud - I yelled - thought I had been shot! A very loud "crack" that really seemed to indicate something broke.

Our local electronics chap has looked at it and said there were capacitors burnt out and he replaced them. Although the unit kept working after the incident - once it was turned off at the wall the service guy could not initially power it up again. Once he replaced the capacitors he restored power to the unit but then noted the display chip was damaged - but this is the point where he could not proceed because parts - the display chip - were not available - nor was he able to predict whether once the display chip was replaced there may be further issues beyond that - perhaps requiring other replacement parts.

I accept that you may well be correct and replacement of the unit could well be the only solution - but really wanted to know if there are Tevion parts available somewhere. Googling Tevion I saw comments indicating Tevion was actually an Aldi brand and they had been selling their products for at least 5 years that I could see. It just seemed surprising that Aldi could keep selling similar products successfully if in fact they were virtually disposable - with replacement parts and servicing so difficult to come by. Can you shed any light on this aspect? thanks for your efforts. Glenda

Hi thanks for using fixya!

You have to call your retailer about this and ask about a service center and for sure they will recommend it.

    hi again,

As you know, most DVD player now a days is like a disposable one. Sometimes, the accredited service centers are selling and chaning parts of their own prodcuet or there is a third party company that are working under the brand. If you are not confident enough with your player and might cause more damages, you should try other service centers that could fix it and if it is a reasonable price other than buying a new one.

I know that you have purchased the unit for about more than a better price and quality. However, you must be sure that the player is working properly and wonr't give any problem at all. The only solution now is to try other service centers that could have a original part of the unit or atleast well known from the brand itself.

Hi...
From the info you have given, your player is probably running a few degrees hotter than usual. This causes the fan to spin at a faster than usual speed causing that noise. It can happen if you keep your player in an enclosed space blocking the heat vents from dispersing the heat. Make sure that you place it in a location where it can disperse heat more easily. This will hopefully resolve the issue...

if still the problem exists u sholud go for a change of player because the service costs around $300... its better to purchase a new one..

thank u

I purchased a Tevion tsd-dr40hd on the 23.5.08, i am a disabled pensioner and $400.00 is a lot of money for me to save. I had to wait some time until i could afford a home theatre technician to install it...

i had a similar problem, with another tevion model, earlier this year. i was able to resolve it by getting in touch with Pebble Electronics, (they handle the tevions). you might start by emailing your details to info@pebble-ltd.com.au.
hope this is of some help.
