Question about Sony PlayStation 2 Slimline Console

Disc error issues with PlayStation 2 slim

Recently, my PlayStation 2 slim got water in it from a trip to a friends house.  When I tried to start it up after I got home, I didn't dry it out and needless to say, the game didn't work.  I have a device that allows me to modify my PlayStation so that I can play while the case is open and I saw that the disc would jerk slowly in a circle, and it would rotate far more slowly than what I had come to expect.  When I tried to play a Playstation 1 game, it loaded fine.  The Playstation makes strange and awkward noises when I start it with a game inside, but it will still try to read the disc, and it takes a moment before it goes to the disc read error screen.  I've heard that the plastic lens on the laser can melt, and I have left my Playstation on overnight by accident a couple of times.  In addition, while trying to diagnose the problem, I accidentally broke the power switch off of my PlayStation, so now I have no way to start it.  Should I try to solder it back on?
Thanks for any help.

Re: Disc error issues with PlayStation 2 slim

Hi eetsbeets,

It is not a problem leaving your Slim turned on, it is mainly leaving a disc that is unreadable in the Slim for long times that melts the laser.  So it is best if you find that your getting disc read error not to allow the laser to try reading it for hours needlessly.

I think I got an email or phone call from  you about repairing this slim for you.  I have ordered a power switch, and have lasers on hand. The cost for Repair and return shipping if I change the laser, and the reset/power button card, will be $39..  Contact me at

If you can do it yourself, you can get the power/reset button and LAser replacements on Ebay. I suggest not to resolder the swtich on as a new one is not that expensive.

Disk read error

The 'Disc Read Error' error message, 'Please Insert a Playstation 2 Formatted Disc' error message, or the 'No Data' error message is an indicator by your system that the console is having difficulty reading the game disc. This could be for many reasons; usually this is because the game disc is damaged or unreadable. However, in some situations, this can be a sign of a more serious issue with your Sony PlayStation 2. Try all of the steps listed below to troubleshoot the error:

Check the game disc.

1. If there are any noticeable scratches or smudges on the surface of the game disc, try to clean them off by using a non-abrasive cotton cloth.
Note: Do not rub hard and do not rub in a circular motion as this could further damage the game disc.
2. If there aren’t any noticeable scratches or smudges on the surface of the game disc, try using that game disc in another PlayStation 2.

* If the game disc works in another system, this is an indicator that your PlayStation 2 may be damaged. For information on getting your system repaired or replaced, you will want to contact Sony directly for assistance at 1-800-345-SONY.
* If the game disc does not work in another system, this is a good indicator that the disc is damaged or defective. To acquire a replacement game disc, you will want to refer to your manual for warranty information specific to your product.

Some Playstation systems, especially the older models, have trouble reading some newly manufactured Playstation 2 game disks. Sony recommends using their Auto Diagnosis tool ( to resolve this issue.

Please insert ps2 format disc?

Try inserting the disc in your computer. If it reads its fine. Then look if the Slus...... is compatible.maybe thats why it doesn't play. your ps2 must have an old bios system even if slim.

Disc doesnt spin , the lens dont move up and down , only lights red

Sounds like a motor issue, not a laser issue.

That link is for a new snake motor which moves the laser back and forth

This link is for a new spindle motor.
