New Computer Shuts Itself Down

My week old Dell has been shutting itself down after I leave it for a few hours. I never use it for very long, so it is not a fan/overheating problem. Also, it is constantly plugged in, so it is not a battery problem. I cannot find out where the power settings are because I am unused to Windows 8. I cannot turn the laptop back on unless I first unplug the power cord. Also, the lights all turn off. (Meaning that it can sleep w/ the lights on and wakes up, but it is completely off when this happens.) I have never had a Dell before, so I am unsure if there are more settings that I am not finding. Thanks for any and all help. Have a great day!!

Call DELL support. Doesn't sound normal. There is Standby and Hibernate modes; neither of which would require you to unplug and plug-in the power cord in order to start the machine.

Dell support will have you run the Dell diagnostic at startup which will detect hardware problems. Or you could run it without calling...

Unplug power and remove battery
Press and hold power button 20 seconds
Replace battery, plug power cord in
Hold down the "Fn" key (to left of space bar)
Turn power button on while still holding Fn key
When diagnostics begins, let go of Fun key
Note any errors; let Dell know your findings

I had some diagnostic test run and nothing came up. I think that the issue is that my computer is in hibernate mode. That would explain why it turns off when I am not using it. However, I don't know how to turn hibernate off.

SOURCE: overheat?

It sounds like an overheating problem. When it is booted, does it run ok other than just being slow? Check your cooling fan and make sure it is running and not stopped up. That is a number one symtom of overheating is freezing and rebooting by itself. There is a free program called "Motherboard Monitor 5" that will monitor the temp for you and set off an alarm when it is getting to hot. Check that problem first. Hopes this helps!

SOURCE: Dell Inspiron 8600 - overheating and shutting down

Start by cleaning the fan and heat sink. Dirt or dust build up can cause them not to work as efficiently as they should. If cleaning doesn't fix it, you might consider replacing the fan and heat sink or purchasing a cooling pad.

SOURCE: Dell Vostro 1000 shut down and won't turn back on

nope, it is your dc power regulator board. you will note this happens if the battery is in or out of the laptop. that is the key test. some regulators are on the main board and some are seperate for this reason. I think the vostro though is on the main board. A little board re-work will resolve this issue after replacing some components, but this is way beyond a home user's ability.. trust me on this. Sorry for the bad news. Thanks!

My laptop shuts down suddenly

Is it overheating? Is the fan and vents clean and allowing sufficent air flow? Was it left unattended and shut down? If so change Power settings to High Performance, change Sleep to Never, Change Hibernate to never. I don't know your OS to give detailed info.

Computer shuts off after using for few hours

You are having a heat problem. The ventilation holes may be filled up with dirt or dust and the main processing chip may be getting too hot. To protect itself, it shuts itself down. If the vents are clean, then you may need to buy a new fan.

System worked for 2 hours then shut off came back on a few times

It shuts down to protect itself from overheating, looks like you tried to use it too much without sorting the problem out.
You can try and give it a good clean out. Google cleaning computers.
I usually use a small brush, my vaccum cleaner and sometimes an air duster

Dell 1503FP works, but won't start up again for a few hours

Hello there.
Seems like electronics pack up but try an old one. disconnect all the data cables from your monitor side(HDMI, DisplayPort, VGA, USB etc.) or computer side if the ones on display are built-in. Leave only the power cable. Unplug the monitor`s power cable. Press the POWER button on the front of the display and keep it pressed for 45 secs. Plug everything back and give it a try.
Good luck.

Unit powers itself down

does it do this when on battery mode?
or when its plugged in?
i found they do tend to drain quicker the older it gets and that just because of a week internal battery.. i just leave mine plugged in to the cig lighter in my car and i dont have that problem but if you have to use battery power it will drain fast no real fix unless you get a new internal battery and its much easier to just leave it plugged in.

New Computer with Vista shuts down by itself when not in use

To get to the Event Viewer, click the start button and in the search box at the bottom, type

eventvwr

and press Enter. Click Windows Logs and check the Application and System logs for any errors that occur when the computer shuts down.

If your computer was fine before the RAM upgrade, take the RAM back out and leave it alone for a while to see if it shuts down.

Also, change your screensaver.
