Question about Minolta Maxxum 5 / Dynax 5 35mm SLR Camera

Open Question

Blue glow in the viewfinder of Minolta Maxxum 5

The first I heard about a blue glow in the viewfinders of late-model Maxxums was in an eBay guide written by J.D. Katz. Apparently Maxxums 3, 4, 5, GT, QTsi, STsi, HTsi, XTsi and probably the 50 and 70 are susceptible. All were assembled in either Malaysia or China and all have penta-mirror viewfinders. Both my Maxxum 5 and my XTsi just recently started doing it: the 5 has sapphire-blue streaks on either side of the viewfinder; the XTsi's viewfinder has just a faint blue haze. Probably some coating on the glass inside the viewfinder is breaking down with age. It's a shame because they are otherwise excellent cameras. While it is an annoyance, it is confined to the viewfinder and should not affect the images taken. Probably won't have much luck getting Sony to do anything about it either, since they're film cameras and they're getting old.... Does anyone have some further insight on this issue?

First remove the battery. wipe off the battery contacts. reinstall the battery. Battery may be weak, replace.
If that fails, remove the lens. See the mirror in there?
If its stuck in the up position, you can return it by hand. But I recommend a toothpick. It won't leave fingerprints.

SOURCE: Model QTsi Maxxum. Need a new battery chamber

The battery door on these models just hooks under a wire next to the battery hole. They can pop off rather easily as they are a small piece held in place by a spring, essentially.
You can often find the part on ebay for a few $ and snap it in place yourself. The same battery door is used by the XTsi, HTsi, STsi cameras.
Its very possible that you did not lock it properly the last time you put in new batteries. Hold the door down while you turn the quarter as you lock or unlock it. Otherwise the pressure of the battery spring will prevent a good lock.

Camera won't take pictures.

Go into the settings and select Clean CCD. It should be under the blue menu. The shutter curtain has a tendency to stick on this model. There was a recall on them way back when they first came out. 1a53cc1b-6da0-4b38-942c-78caadf51633.gif 1bcf9dee-9615-448f-a170-16ef0e446320.gif

When I install the battery in my 7000i it makes a noise the screen has two lines appear but the camera will not turn on.

I had a similar problem with my 8000i. Parts are getting scarce for these older Maxxums, but you can still get it repaired. Unless you are emotionally attached to this 7000i consider replacing it. You should be able to find another on Ebay for a decent price. You might also consider the subsequent generations which offer better AF performance. The 650xi, 700xi and 800xi are all good cameras and available on Ebay. Lighter versions like the Maxxum 70 and the XTsi are also available. The last of the film Maxxums was the single digit 7. It is generally regarded as the best of the Maxxum series, but still sells on Ebay over 150.00 typically. These subsequent models will take all your maxxum lenses and flashes. These newer models offer many other features and often less weight to carry around.

Trying to use a Phoenix 500mm telephoto lens and the shutter won't release

Some longer Tele lenses extend into the camera and prevent the mirror from moving up on some models with larger mirrors. One solution> get a 1.4 teleconverter It will add some space between camera and lens. Two solution> buy another Maxxum body on Ebay. Some Maxxums can be bought very cheap.

Minolta SLR Lens on Sony - Does it work.

As I understand it, Sony bought Minolta, lock, stock, and barrel. Theoretically the lenses should fit and may work on manual, but I'm very sure they will not totally work on sony digital cameras. I wouldn't even try to fit them as the autofocus system on the camera may be damaged.

It sounds like the infamous aperture control problem. I had mine fixed by this place:

They had it for a couple of weeks, and when I got it back it worked perfectly.

Your camera either has no focusing screen or the screen is dislodged. Remove lens and look above the mirror : looks like frosty glass.
