Re: Ribbon Lift Eractic

Try the unit without the ribbon installed if the mech. seems to operate properly you may only need a new ribbon.  If the condition continues you may need a new ribbon motor or board.

IBM Wheelwriter 2, the bottom half of the letters are not printing. It is not the ribbon because I have changed it out.

Two things come to mind for this problem. First try pushing down firmly on both ends of the black rubber platen roller. Sometimes the black plastic latch on either side may break causing one side of the roller to lift up causing partial print. The other possibility is the ribbon is not lifting correctly. A technician can adjust the ribbon lift. After typing a few letters, take the ribbon out and look at the letters on the ribbon. Are they in the middle of the ribbon or are they at the top or bottom of the ribbon? middle of ribbon is correct.

    3. Re-insert the daisy wheel and push the black lever towards the platen until it locks in place.
  2. Is the ribbon moving?
    1. Lift the ribbon cartridge out of the typewriter
    2. Inspect the ribbon for damage
    3. If the ribbon is silver, it is exhausted and must be replaced
    4. If the hammer has been striking in one place, there will be a clear area near the center of the ribbon.
    5. Turn the colored knob on the left side of the ribbon cartridge counter-clockwise to advance the ribbon a small amount. Replace the ribbon if it will not advance.
    6. Re-insert the ribbon
  3. Turn on the typewriter, insert a piece of paper into the typewriter and type a few letters
    1. Did the hammer move forward?
    2. If the hammer moved, did the ribbon advance with each keystroke?
If the hammer did not move or the ribbon did not advance, the typewriter will require service. If the typewriter still does not make an impression on the paper, your typewriter will require service.

IBM WW1000 ribbon advance not working, I have checked the ribbon motor and ribbon feed follower + spring all seem OK, Is this a function board or anything I may be missing.

Be sure the Ribbon lift/feed motor is plugged in, alittle WD 40 on thw upper and lower bearings, mark the gear that engages the ribbon and type to see if it moves if it moves ikt isn't fully engaging the ribbon this happens with some generic supplies.

Smith Corona SD680 typewriter correction ribbon arms do not lift the correction ribbon up to correct anything. It does type fine with the black ribbon....I just cannot correct my mistakes. Can I fix the...

Do they try to lift? Try taking off the corr tape, then hit correct and see if arms lift. If they do, try a different corr tape. Sometimes they bind up.

How to change the correction tape?

Changing the Correction Tape

1) Move the print carrier to the center of the platen using the SPACE or BS key.

2) To replace the correction tape, lift out the typing ribbon cassette (see Changing The Ribbon Cassette) and remove the two spools of the lift off tape by pulling them outwards.

3) Place the empty spool of new tape on the left pin so that the tape winds clockwise. Place the tape around the left guide. Pull the tape around the right

guide and place the loaded spool on the right pin so that the tape unwinds counter-clockwise.

Note: Make sure the sticky side of the tape is facing the platen.

4) Manually turn the left-hand spool in the clockwise direction, tightening the tape until resistance is felt.

5) Replace the typing ribbon cassette.
6) Press the CODE + = (SETTING) key.

Changing the Ribbon Cassette

1) Move the print carrier to the center of the platen using the SPACE or BS key.

2) Hold the ribbon cassette on both sides and lift up the front portion (where the ribbon is exposed) to remove the cassette.

3) To insert a new cassette, place the back end of the cassette on the cassette

holder on the carrier and gently press down on the front of the cassette unit it clicks into place.

4) Turn the ribbon feed knob counter-clockwise again to take up any slack in the ribbon.
5) Presss the CODE + = (SETTING) key.

Good Luck!

Many brother type writers have two cam assemblies under ribbon holder. One operates the print hammer and the other operates the correction ribbon lift. sometimes they gets stuck or lock themselves up. turning on and off a few times will take care of it, but sometimes it needs to be worked on by a tech. If you look when you type a character, most likely the print hammer is not firing or it is striking the correction ribbon instead of the black ribbon.

Let us know if you want to know something more else please accept the suggestion.

Nothing shows on the paper when I type.

Remove and observe the ribbon, wind the feedwheel to see if the ribbon if moving at all. Make sure that the correction tape is not in front of the printheel and installed properly. (electronic machines use non-sticky lift-off tapes).. Observe the hammer movement. The ribbon winder in the cartrige could be defective, the ribbon ffeed mechanism in the machine may need repair/replacement. Make sure there is a printwheel in the machine.
