This dryer is 8 years old. Do you think it would be worth the money to fix either of these problems or should I replace the dryer. I don't want to put money into it if this is the beginning of mechanical issues. I will need to call a repairman. This is the first problem I have had. I apprecite your expertise.

Thank you so much. You were right on with the diagnosis-it was an ignitor and I just paid the repairman 120.00. (much cheaper than a new dryer). I appreciate your help.

First thing to check is the ignitor underneath the drum. (You have to open the panel to see it)  It should glow shortly after the dryer starts, then the flame starts and the ignitor shuts off.  If the ignitor is glowing but the gas does not light then the gas valve coils may have to be replaced.  If the gas ignites but does not stay on either the flame sensor or the coils are at fault.

I think Consumer Reports figures typical dryer life to be about 14 years.  Based on that 8 years seems young.  I fix my own dryer so the cost is less but I have kept it running for 34 years.  My problem is that parts are becoming hard to find.  Parts cost for an ignitor should be less than $50, flame sensor less than that, and for a coil assembly about $100.  (I am trying to recall from memory and I have not bought those parts for several years but I have boosted the prices from what I remember.)  You could look online to get a better idea based on part numbers.  The cost of labor and time for troubleshooting will be the biggest cost.  Call around for some estimates and then compare the possible total to tthe cost of a new machine.  Don't forget to look for any energy savings or rebates taht will help offset the cost of a new dryer.

Dryer wont heat. we have cleaned out all the lint, replaced the top thermostat and are frustrated. seems like it heats for a couple minutes then nothing.

Sounds like a bad heating element . Many dryers use a dual coil setup ( one coil for low to med, both for high heat). Also check your dryer discharge vent. A blocked vent will not allow the humidity to escape, which will result in your clothes not drying or taking multiple cycles to dry. Turn the dryer on, and find the vent discharge on the outside of your home and just hold your hand there. If you do not feel substantial airflow you have a blocked vent or blocked discharge tube. But from what you described, I would bet on either a bad heating element or failed heating element relay.

MY pye2300azw maytag dryer does not seem to be heating hot enough. can you suggest a solution please. Does it need a new thermostat, nothing wrong with the heating element.

Number 10 is the most likely suspect. The blower wheel tends to get wobbled out and won't send enough heat through the drum making it take twice as long to dry the clothes.themobilian_13.jpgthemobilian_14.jpgthemobilian_15.jpgthemobilian_16.jpgthemobilian_17.jpg

Electric Dryer

When you first start out with a cold dryer the dryer runs fine, then when you start a second load if wont?

It sounds like you motor is overheating, Your dryer probably needs to be cleaned, taken apart and all of the lint build up around motor removed. also so clean the venting and weather hood outside.
