I had forgotten my password so i held in the rest button and it caused my network to not work. Ive tried everything i could find online about this situation.

Plug your computer directly into the Internet appliance (cable modem, DSL modem, etc.). Reboot. If using Windows, open a command prompt and type "ipconfig", without the quotes, then hit Enter. Look at the line for Gateway.

If it starts with 192.168, write down the whole number. If it starts with 10., write down the whole number. If it starts with any other number, you're done in here.

If the Gateway number started with 192.168 or a 10. (ie 192.168.1.254 or 10.1.10.1), disconnect your computer from the Internet appliance, then connect it to the router. Power up the router. Go back into the command window (Start, Run, CMD, Enter or click on Command Prompt in the Start Menu under Accessories). Do the ipconfig thing again, and look at the gateway. This is the IP address of the router, typically 192.168.1.1.

Open your browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.). In the address bar, type in the gateway address of the router, typically 192.168.1.1. If the IP address of the router was the same as that of the Internet appliance, change the last number to something different (if the modem and router were both 192.168.1.1, change the router to 192.168.1.2). Turn off DHCP on the router. Connect the router to the modem, plugging into of the numbered ports on the back of the router. All done.

If the IP address of the modem was something other than a 192.168 or 10 based number, simply plug the cable from the modem into the WAN port on the router, plug your computer into one of the numbered ports, then restart everything.

MY LINKSYS WRT54G2 IS OK BUT CAN'T FIND SERVER.

The Linksys WRT54G2 is Cable/DSL router with 4 port switch. It has many features including a built-in DHCP server. By default, it's IP address is 192.168.1.1, username: blank and password: admin.

Plug in the Modem to the Linksys router's Internet / WAN port then plug your PC's to any of the 4 ports (1,2,3 & 4). The Linksys router once turned ON will automatically provide your PC with IP address starting with 192.168.1.xx (x means number from 100-149).

Make sure that known working ethernet cables are being used. Check your computer's IP adress by going to the command prompt. Start>RUN>type CMD then press Enter. Type IPCONFIG and check the IP address (e.g. 192.168.1.100). Check you PC's network adapter if you don't get an IP address from the Linksys router.

You may opt to reset the router by pressing the reset button at the back for 30 seconds if it fails to give out DHCP.

Cheers!

No internet access with wireless

Hi,

First of all check the DSL cable must be in WAN port of the linksys router. if it is done then do the following.

Actually DSL modem and Linksys router are conflicting with their IP class. Means DSL and Linksys routers are using the same IP class of 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1.

You must change one's IP class because both are routers and if they having same class they cant communicate. Unplug the WAN cable of the linksys. open browser and put ip 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 any one which works for u in the address bar. Username and password hopefully be admin admin or just admin and password blank field.
when you access the linksys router configuration page then come to LAN configuration. If there IP is 192.168.1.1 then change it to 192.168.0.1 and if it is 192.168.0.1 then change it to 192.168.1.1 Save configuration and reboot your laptop and plug dsl cable to linksys WAN port.
Hope now this will work.

Hasan

This are some steps on how to setup your modem/router
New DSL Modem Available
Embarq is now shipping an updated version of the DSL Modem called the "660". It is smaller than the older model (645) and is much easier to setup.
A few years ago, Sprint/Embarq changed the way their servers communicate with the DSL modems. The new method is called DHCP, which is how the 660 modem works. The older 645 Modem used "PPPoE". So it's best to have the new 660 DSL modem.
The older 645 modem also had the same default IP address as the Linksys Router (192.168.1.1) - so you had to change one of the addresses to make them work together.
The new 660 DSL modem uses 192.168.2.1 as the default IP address. This does not conflict with the default IP address of the Linksys Router (192.168.1.1). Note that if you had changed the Linksys Router IP address to 192.168.2.1, then you will first need to reset it back to the default address 192.168.1.1.
If you call Embarq and request the new 660 DSL modem they will sent it to you at no cost. When you install the 660 DSL modem, you need to be sure that you power down the old 645 modem amd leave it off at least 1 hour before you plug in the 660 DSL modem. The Embarq server needs to "forget" the old 645 modem. After an hour, all you should have to do is plug in the new 660 modem and everything should start up properly.
Call Embarq Tech Support 1-877-646-3282 if you have problems setting up the modem. If the Internet Lights does not come on after a few moments - then call Embarq Tech Support.

Linksys WRT54G wireless router not compatible with Aztech modem?

Darvin, gotta love your ISP. Never fear......

if it isn't too much of a problem (knowing you have wireless setup done already), then do a factory reset on your router ** remember to copy the WEP Key if you have, or recall the PASS PHRASE so you won't have to reset all wireless devices ** Reset is located on back, you need a ball point pen to reach the reset switch.

Reset process: unplug, take ballpoint pen & insert into reset switch & plug unit back in. Sometimes tricky, but you should notice green light goes to yellow/orange upon resetting.

RESET or NOT - you want the Linksys set for ::

Connection Type - AUTOMATIC (for automatic discovery)
Router IP Address - 192.168.2.1

DCHP - ON, Addresses - 192.168.2.100 and allow 5-50 users
(for security, assign the number of DESKTOP + WIRELESS expected users +1, this way you don't get overrun without knowlege)

Take the cable from Aztech ETHERNET OUT to WAN on Linksys. (usually BLUE) (??) not 100% sure as I have the little silver pocket edition of the same Router. - power cycle (turn both DSL modem & Linksys off for 20 seconds. turn on DSL Modem, wait till it's about as ready as possible, turn on Linksys, should only take 20-30 seconds to power up & recognize.

VERIFY SETTINGS: access router - 192.168.2.1, goto STATUS. you should see IP Addressing, SubNet, DNS1 & DNS2 settings. If you do not, then you have no internet connection.

ALTERNATIVE,

Setup Linksys Router with COnnection Type: PPoE, you will need your ISP assigned ID & Password. Follow all other instructions properly.

If you still have problems, please contact me at 906-495-1707 or via Yahoo IM junodr@yahoo.com or through this website.

Cd won't install Installshield error 1628

You do not need the CD to install the wireless router.

Assuming you have a dsl or Cable Internet connection established already, lets get you setup.

Plug the cable provided with the router into the cable/dsl modem.

You will need additional cable, for now, to plug your laptop into the router. Please do so now.

Your router will automatically assign an IP address to your laptop. It sould be 192.168.1.100

Your router will automatically assign an Gateway address to your laptop. It sould be 192.168.1.1

Your IP address is your physical address to therouter, Hense to the cable, Hense to the Web. Hense.

The Gateway IP is the actual IP used as the Gateway to the cable/DSL modem, hence, this is your actual connectivity. OK, let's get serious. The cable modem gets its IP information from you cable/DSL provider. This information is then collected by the router and the router assigns a local address thus allowing you to connect more than one device, (i.e. computer, printer, camera) and gain Internet access from that router. Its kind of like spoofing or fooling the system into thinking each device has its own address from the cable/DSL provder and allowing it to have a connection to the Web. I explain this as I feel understading how the router actually functions weill enable you to better utilize thenetwork and also protect your computer and devices from outside attacks.
An example:

The cable/DSL provider will provide the following:
IP: 72.60.55.10
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 72.60.55.1

Your Linksys Router takes this information, and makes it the base IP for its setup. It then allows you to assign a local address block for your network devices, called "Private" IP's. These are IP addresses that cannot or should not be found on the Internet.
An Example:

IP: 192.168.1.100
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.1

In the above example the Gateway address of 192.168.1.1 is the physical address of the router. To verify this information Go to Start, Control Panel, Network, Locate your Local Area Connection. This is always the wired network card in your laptop. You should also see one for your wireless network card. We will not yet be working with this device, but remember where it is as we will be working with it soon. Right-click on the Local area connection and go to Status and left-click. On the tabs at the top of this window, click on the support tab. You should now ba looking at the addresses I talked about earlier. And if all is well, you quite possibly could be able to open your browser, Internet Explorer or Mozilla or Safari and access the Internet. Having said that let's configure the router.

I am going to take a short break and hope you understand all I have spoke of. I await you response and any questions you may have.

My name is Todd and I am here to help you. We will get you up and running in no time.

Unable to Connect to Internet

Make sure that the cable/dsl modem is connected to the blue port on the Linksys router that say's internet and your computer to any of the yellow ethernet ports. Check what is the IP address of your computer by typing ipconfig on the command prompt(assuming your using Windows, to open command prompt click start and go to Run and type cmd, a black windows will open normally it will say C:\Document\Settings\Owner>. Your computer should obtain an IP address of 192.168.1.x, open Internet Explorer and type this address on the address bar http://192.168.1.1 when you get a prompt for a username and a password, leave the username blank and type "admin" for a password from there you can now check the entire settings of your linksys router, check the Status and make sure your router is getting a valid Internet IP address if not you may require manually setting up the configuration of your ISP on the router.

Just connected to cable modem from dsl

two things are you hooked up from the dsl to the router via Ethernet or usb is so check the settings in the router, it should be auto, so it could choose but lets not assume anything.may sure dhcp client or server is enabled on the router, if not it would not pick up the ip adddress from dsl.
Is the mac address of your computer hardcoded to your dsl, if it is then you would have to clone your pc mac to the router for it to work.
If this is not the case, try a different router if it works the router is faulty. if that does not work plug the dsl directly to the pc and go to start, run type ipconfig /all if you recieve an ip address and you can see a dns address from your isp and you can go to the internet, then the problem is your router, if not the problem is with you isp dsl, please contact them. was this helpful let me know.

Trying to get my linksys wireless router to go on dsl .

All you need to do is change the Linksys router's IP address. Because the westell and the linksys has the same range of IP address that creates a conflict on your network that's why you can't get online.

First login to the setup page of your linksys router.
  1. Under the Setup Tab (this is the first screen that you will see after typing in the linksys router's password.) make sure that the Internet connection type is set to Automatic Configuration- DHCP, Then on the same page look for router IP address or LAN IP address. By default its 192.168.1.1, you need to change it to 192.168.2.1. And hit save settings. You will get disconnected from the linksys page, that is normal. If you want to log back in to the router page you use the new address of your linksys (192.168.2.1).
  2. Now you restart your computer to refresh the connection and that should get you online.

No internet connection

You didn't specify if you're using DSL or Cable internet.

With DSL, keep in mind the software1.gif on the PC is what "dials out" to the ISP with your name / password, and you MUST set the name and password in the router. Otherwise, ONLY the computer that has the software installed (verizon, etc) will be able to connect.

If you're using a cable connection, you don't have to do this, however, most newer Linksys routers come with a 'setup' disk, which MUST be used regardless of connection type.
