Question about Apple Genuine Pioneer "SuperDrive" DVR-106PB 4X DVD RW/16X CD-R/10X CD-RW (6780465B) Burner

MACBOOK PRO SuperDrive Reads somes Recorded DVDs fine but some appear as empty while in other mas are fine

Hi My Macbook pro has problems reading some specific Disks that are read without problems in other macbooks.    Is not a random problem, for example we receive recorded DVDs from the same company and DVD-R brand and is always the same DVD the one that doesn't read.  In Disk Utility apears as DVD-RW and they aren't. It's well known that the Superdrives in the Apple laptops are junk. I'm on the third drive in my 2006 Macbook Pro and it just started ejecting DVDs without playing them. Luckily, my Apple Care contract expires in August so I'll truck my machine down to the Apple Store to have another one installed.

Some pioneer dvd models have firmware upgrades to solve problems with some DVD brands - check your model and visit the pioneer components website - I have a DVD reader which worked better after the firmware upgrade - try this site http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=PCVRZ44G&upd_id=1692&os_id=16

Macbook pro will not read dvds

If it reads CDs but not DVDs, the optical drive is faulty. You can get it replaced by an Apple tech, or you can invest in an external optical drive.

There has been a known issue with the first key (any key) of a Macbook Pro, not responding when typed and Apple appears to have addressed this with this software update for the Macbook and Macbook Pro:

Run the Macbook Pro Software Update v1.1 and the Macbook, Macbook Pro Keyboard Firmware update v 1.0 per this link:

Let me know if this helps.

DVDs recorded & finalised on LG DR175 unrecognized by MacBook Pro

you may find the necessary codecs are not installed on your MacBook.
www.freecodecs.com and see if you can get them there (divx,xvid,mpeg1,mpeg2 or a codec pack- or ffd-show)
also update the drivers for the dvd drive.

MacBook Pro doesn't recognize certain discs? :/

Please excuse me for my bad english.

I spent several hours scratching my head trying stupid and complex solutions like reseting p-ram, re-flashing the unit, etc.

The final solution...
  1. Buy a compressed air can (for electronics cleanning).
  2. Please turn off your MacBook pro
  3. Purge the humidity by pushing a little the trigger. Wait some seconds until it just blows dry and cold air.
  4. Blow air from the tray entering and towards the back of the unit.
  5. Enjoy your movies!
