Problem for HP OfficeJet 7410 All-In-One InkJet Printer

Automatic document feeder does not work-- does not pick up paper

By vrooman on May 28, 2009

" "
Error message " Close automatic document feeder cover" or sometimes "clear jam". But Document feeder cover is closed, and there is no jam. Sometimes there is a clack, clack, clack, clack noise when the machine is started. Front roller does not grasp paper. It does not lift to accept the paper and power it through the machine. When you lift the feeding mechanism you can hear a mild clunk sound. Pulling and reinstalling the power cord does not help. Turning the machine off and restrarting does not help.Rebooting does not help and restarting does not help The machine works OK from the flat plate My ADF doesn't want to sense the document is there. It seems as though the gear to the back end of the ADF is not touching the ROD which makes the feeder work. I have technician in house but I haven't been able to find a schematic or something of that nature for the OfficeJet to see if we can repair it. Any Solution????? It printed the last item requested. Then it told me paper jam and it was correct. I pulled the paper thru and pressed OK but it refudes to accept there is no paper jam. I turned it off , uplugged it, turned off the computer, cycled it thru by turnning rollers with my fingers. Still the same error. Paper jam clear jam and press OK. Help anyone. I really like the machine and it has been really trouble free. Cleaning issues only.

Yes, I had the same problem, and I finally got it to work. I took the printer apart and removed any paper that was stuck in the ADF in the top and it in the duplex in the back. I then did a reset and it still would not work. What I did was to turn off the printer by hitting the power button, unplug the power cable and let it sit for while so it loses its memory. then follow the instructions on HP web site on how to do a power cycle.

Solution four: Perform a power cycle
1. Turn the product off.
2. Unplug the power cord from the product.
3. Wait 30 seconds, and then connect the power cord to the product.
4. Turn the product on.
5. Make a color copy by pressing the Start Copy Color button on the control panel.
If the copy job is successful, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the error message displays again, proceed to the next solution.
Solution five: Reset the product
Follow these steps to reset the product.
Step one: Perform a partial reset
1. Disconnect the power cord from the product.
2. Press and hold # and 3 while reconnecting the power cord to the product, and then release both buttons.
3. Try making a color copy by pressing the Start Copy Color button on the product control panel.
If the partial reset resolves the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
If the error message displays again, proceed to the next step to try a semi-full reset.
Step two: Perform a semi-full reset
CAUTION: Performing a semi-full reset deletes any saved phone numbers on the product.
1. Disconnect the power cord from the product.
2. Press and hold # and 6 while reconnecting the power cord to the product, and then release both buttons.
3. Try making a color copy by pressing the Start Copy Color button on the product control panel.

In my case it still would not work, so I turned the printer off for about an hour so the memory would be erased. Then after I got it on I did a factory reset. - press setup, press 6, then press 3.

I'm so excited, my printer is now working again. HP would not repair it for me and would only send me a newer model, but the older ones are easier to repair and parts are available. My email address is: edwina.mann@comcast.net . Good luck.

The problem may be that the ADF motor has died. HP won't sell a replacement. I have this problem and don't have a solution. Decided I wouldn't buy an HP All-in-One again.
