Play in the mirror of SLR after cklicking the shot

I have Nikon D5000. After the click, there is a small noticable movement in my viewfinder and I can feel there is a play in mirror once it sits back. I can also see the viewfinder move a little when the shot is taken. Is this a problem or common in SLRs ?

Not sure what is going on with that but there is a recall on these for a power issue. See if you can send it in for that and they look the whole thing over for free. http://www.nikonusa.com/Service-And-Support/Service-Advisories/D5000-Service-Advisory.page

Is the Sony Cybershot DSC H3 an SLR camera? How does one distinguish an SLR from another camera? Thanks. Bill

No, it is not a SLR or DSLR camera. SLR cameras have a mirror in them, where as point-and-shoot class cameras do not. With an SLR the mirror allows you to look through the lens, so that you are actually seeing through the lens when looking in the viewfinder. With a point and shoot, even a superzoom like the H3, the viewfinder is actually a small LCD, showing you a digital *image* of what the sensor sees.

Another primary feature is that SLR and DSLRs have removable lenses. They also are typically faster, and have better lower light performance. On the downside they are typically more expensive, larger and heavier.

All DSLRs will be noted as such. In Sony's case, their DSLR line is named "Alpha".

I had my D5000 for a month now, recently i noticed something with my camera. looking though the viewfinder only, whenever i focus (half pressing the shutter button), the view from the viewfinder moves up,...

Welcome to the real world of photography, using the viewfinder is a whole new experience in the crating of fine photographs. Aside from this what you are actually seeing is the VR turning on and locking onto the target, you should actually feel this happening as well (if you are holding the camera correctly) What you are experiencing is normal. Thank you for the excellent description

I have a nikon d 40 and was wondering if the display screen can be used to preview the shot instead of using the eye piece .

The Nikon D40 is not equipped with the Live View feature which allows the user to use the camera's LCD to preview the shot. You can only use the viewfinder eye piece.

Do we have option to take pics through LCD in Nikon D40X?

Hi. No you can't shoot by viewing the LCD, only by using the eye-level viewfinder. Some SLR cameras have "live-view", which lets you use either the eye-level finder or the LCD. It really isn't a very good method of shooting with an SLR, as you first have to lock the mirror up, compose your shot, then drop the mirror back down. Using the eye-level finder also blocks out the bright light that makes the LCD difficult to use in sunlight. Hope this helps answer your question.

Yup! Welcome to the world of digital SLR cameras. Because of the mirror mechanism used, you can only compose through the viewfinder, unless you want to spring for the D300 or D3, which (to the extent of my knowledge) are the only Nikon DSLR cameras with Live View (the feature where you see what the lens sees on the monitor).
Don't be too quick to get rid of that camera! It's great!

Nikon D50 LCD Display does not work

NatD, The D50 and indeed most SLR digital cameras [ I have a D40 ] does not allow you to take pictures using the LCD display ... this is by design, you are meant to use the viewfinder and the image you see through it is straight through the lens via a mirror block [ called a reflex pentamirror or prism ]. When the mirror is down such that you can see the image in the viewfinder it is obscuring the sensor [ the bit that takes the picture ] and when you take a shot the mirror lifts and the picture is recorded. Its this reason that DSLR's dont use the LCD to shoot, however there are a few now available that do let you do this, such as olympus, new panasonic one and higher end Nikon and Canon cameras. Hope this explains it without getting too detailed!
