Microphone doesnt work

Hi, I have a dell laptop and the microphone used to work before but its been a while since I last used it and now its not working. I've looked up a similar question on this website but I guess because I am using Windows Vista, it doesnt have the same steps to cure the problem. Please help!

SRQfixman, Yes, I do get sound from the speakers, which the only reason I know the problem is with the microphone. I used the Sound Recorder and when I go to play it back, it will play on the Real Player but without sound. But yes, the speakers do have sound.

It is a Dell Insprion 1520. It is the built in microphone. I know it plays on the Real Player because it will run the time but without sound and theres already sound thru the speakers so I figured the microphone isnt on (not recording any sound). Hope that helps.

I went to Control Panel but the "Set Default" button wont pop up to where I can click it (although I do see it). Any other advice?

emtuliloa, if the Restore Defaults button is "greyed" out it would suggest that the defaults have not changed. If you make a change to the properties then the button should become accessible. Not sure it will help but it doesn't hurt to make a change and then click the Restore Defaults button. Let me know. Thanks.

What model Dell do you have? Service tag? Is it an internal or external microphone? How do you know it is playing in Real Player (I don't use it)?

Do you get any sound from the laptop speakers?

Windows Vista is beautiful OS and surely it doesn't have such problems. So, simply just go to control panel and configure sound setting by resetting it to defaults.

If even its not helpful then download drivers for your sound card but be careful it must be compatible with your Vista 32 bit.

Rate this solution if it was helpful to you.

Microphone not working settings

you must sure if the microphone is working, will be a great idea that if you can test in another computer, in that way you see if it is the computer or microphone.
However you must try to restore go to control panel, use the utility system restore, and put the last date that you know was working Good.
Or open the sound in control panel and RUN the troubleshooting in tab for microphone.
God bless you

Integrated webcam microphone error

I just fixed this exact problem. I went to the dell website and found the drivers for the inspiron 1318, Be sure to check "all related drivers for your product" and choose the correct operating system which was defaulted to "bios" when I did this. Then there should be an audio tab with two possible downloads. I downloaded the one labeled "IDT-Driver" and then my microphone started working.

Built-in Microphone

Per the owner's manual:

No, this system has no internal microphone.

You will need and external microphone to record/transmit audio. If you are going to do video conferencing, most high quality new webcams have a built in microphone in the webcam

Microphone are not working

it could be a slot issue. to make sure that its not the slot or port, try a known good microphone from a friend or from the store. then if the known good mic still doesnt work, then its the slot or the settings on you sound and game controllers are not setup for the mic. Check control panel and go to sound and audio devices and check the settings for the mic. If the settings are okay then it could be the slot or the port.

Micro phone not working in my DELL Inspiron 6400

There is NO built in microphone with this laptop. You will need to purchase an external microphone and plug it into the mic in socket.
