Hi, I have a dell laptop and the microphone used to work before but its been a while since I last used it and now its not working. I've looked up a similar question on this website but I guess because I am using Windows Vista, it doesnt have the same steps to cure the problem. Please help!

you must sure if the microphone is working, will be a great idea that if you can test in another computer, in that way you see if it is the computer or microphone. However you must try to restore go to control panel, use the utility system restore, and put the last date that you know was working Good. Or open the sound in control panel and RUN the troubleshooting in tab for microphone. God bless you
hey possible cause is the driver for your microphone is not yet installed, if you have a cd just reinstall the microphone driver, if you dont have, try to go to this link.http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen
I just fixed this exact problem. I went to the dell website and found the drivers for the inspiron 1318, Be sure to check "all related drivers for your product" and choose the correct operating system which was defaulted to "bios" when I did this. Then there should be an audio tab with two possible downloads. I downloaded the one labeled "IDT-Driver" and then my microphone started working.
it could be a slot issue. to make sure that its not the slot or port, try a known good microphone from a friend or from the store. then if the known good mic still doesnt work, then its the slot or the settings on you sound and game controllers are not setup for the mic. Check control panel and go to sound and audio devices and check the settings for the mic. If the settings are okay then it could be the slot or the port.
1)Double click on the speaker icon in the system tray to bring up windows volume control.
2)Go to options, then properties.
3)Select adjust volume for recording.
4)Make sure microphone is ticked.
6)Select the microphone in the windows volume control.
Your microphone is now on. Just set the appropriate volume for the mic.
