I have a singer 31K 20 that won't pick up the bottom thread can anyone help please?

Install a brand new needle and confirm it is installed correctly.

Changing thread brands may be helpful. AVOID old or bargain bin threads. Focus on spending a bit more for better quality thread.

If it still does not work, it could be the machine is out of time. Search for sewing machine timing or take it for service.

Top thread not grabbing bottom thread

Be sure to use a brand new needle--old, bent/damaged needles will not pick up bobbin thread.

If that does not resolve the problem, most likely the machine is out of time. Search sewing machine timing or take it for service.

I have just been given a singer melodie 40.When I start to sew, material is stopped by bobbin? Bobbin is breaking off bits of thread underneath?

Try a brand new needle. Make sure the thread is suitable to the needle and fabric you are using. AVOID old or bargain bin threads. Spend an extra dollar or two for good thread.
All About Needles

Check that there are no loose threads stuck in the upper thread path, ie the tension disk.

ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot when threading the upper thread. Verify that the thread path is correct. Mis-threading will invariably cause broken thread.

Clean out the bobbin area & feed dogs of any lint and loose threads. Check that the bobbin has been installed & threaded correctly and turning the right direction in the bobbin case.

Manually rotate the handwheel one turn until the upper thread grabs the the bobbin thread. Pull it the rest of the way to the top. When beginning to stitch, start slowly and gently hold both thread tails in your left hand until it has made a couple of stitches.

How and Why to Bring up the Bobbin Thread

If you have a manual, make sure you follow the maintenance tips. If the machine needs oiling, be sure to follow the instructions using only fresh good quality sewing machine oil. Most machines that have been given as gifts from a sewist's stash may not have been maintained regularly.

If it still does not stitch properly, take it for service. It could have a timing issue, ie the needle arrives at the bobbin at the wrong time to intercept the bobbin thread.

The needle on my Singer 99k does not face sideways but more at the 20 past position on a clock. It sews ok on most heavier fabrics but the upper thread shreds on light fabrics.

If the thread is shredding, it is usually an incompatibility of the needle, thread, and fabric. Try a different type of needle and make sure the needle's eye is large enough for the thread.

All About Needles

Also, it helps to avoid old/fuzzy or bargain bin threads. Stick with new and better quality thread brand names, ie even Coats & Clark sometimes plays havoc with sewing machines. Also, some machines have an incompatibility with certain thread brands, so you may need to experiment.

NOTE: it is strange that the needle does not sit straight in the needle holder. This could also be causing a problem since the thread is twisting as it penetrates the fabric and not fitting into the needle's scarf like it should.

When you turn the handwheel, does the hook move? If not the top gear on the vertical shaft is stripped and needs to be replaced.
