Laptop not booting up after XP install

I tried installing xp on a pavilion dv5-1235 with vista already installed on it. I did the whole slipstreaming thing with the drivers for xp but after the initial install screen from xp the computer restarted and nothing. It freezes up right at the hp invent screen. I've tried everything flashing memory and hard drive. The computer wont load into vista and wont even start reading the dvd when the hard drive is plugged in. Is there a way to fix this. The hard drive is a Toshiba HDD2H01 MK3252GSX. I would really appreciate any help with this issue.

Actually tried to do a dualboot system. I needed xp to on my laptop for work purposes. But it came preloaded with vista ultimate.

My first and biggest mistake was not burning the Recovery discs before attempting the xp install. Because its a hp for some reason you cannot install directly so I did the whole N-lite thing and created a different partition for xp.

Then restarted and put in xp install disk. Everything started to load fine then it promted for restart. It then froze up the second it restarted. Only way it'll continue loading is when I disconnect the hard drive.

Everything freezes up with the hard drive plugged in. Just got off the phone with HP and they want some money for the recovery disks.

When I unplug the hard drive it loads up but then eventually cant find a hard drive to boot from. But with the hard drive unplugged I can acces the main mb setup screen yes but it can't really fix or repair xp or vista if the hard drive isn't plugged in. Is there maybe a way to reset the mb or load the drivers via usb?

Sounds like the hard drive is dead.  can you mount it externally (or internally) in a different pc to test?  do you have another drive you could test with in this pc?

You need an bootable XP installation CD.
Press F10, or DEL, or whatever to enter your ROM bios firmware menu while power on. Select boot device to be CD-ROM.
Re-boot to CD ROM. Follow installation instructions.

you are most likely getting a BSOD with a stop error code of 0x0000007B which is caused by the Windows XP CD that you are using doesn't have the SATA Hard Drive controller driver needed to recognize and utilize the hard drive. If Lenovo has XP drivers for this model then they should have a SATA driver (roughly 394k) that will need to be loaded FROM A FLOPPY DISKETTE during the boot to XP. (XP Requires the driver to either be slipstreamed into the CD or loaded from a floppy diskette. Trying to load the controller driver USB or a different CD will not work)

Remove vista and install XP on HCL laptop

Your laptop probably has SATA hard disk installed in it. You will need to install from an XP SP2 or later CD for native SATA support. Otherwise you will need to get the SATA drivers for the chipset being used on the laptop and slipstream them onto a new bootable CD or go through the process of adding the drivers manually during the initial phase of the installation.

This is a Vista laptop with a SATA hard drive. Windows XP does not have the SATA drivers, you therefore must slipstream the drivers to a new installation disk

To change os from vista to XP

Hi there,
I hate Vista from my guts! I installed XP SP3 (Slipstreamed) and my Toshiba Portege R500 Flies!
I have posted some notes on similar issue from this forum. Use this website's search engine on "Toshiba R500" and you should be able to fine my posts.
My current job involes rebuilding laptops and desktops so many times that I created this automated slipstreamed XP SP3 CD and I had no issues of Harddrive not being found after all the waiting.

Help me to install WinXP in a Gateway Laptop that came with SATA HDD

you have probably already fixed this but maybe others can find this a little helpful. i had to downgrade a gateway ma7 for one of my customers who had lost their recovery cd with vista on it. Their HD had gone bad.

The reason the XP installer says "no HD" is because the the drivers required by the gateways Sata controller (hd controller) are not preloaded on the xp install disc. The only way around this is to download the windows xp compatible sata drivers from gateways website and then slipstream them into a custon windows xp install cd. its actually not as difficult as it sounds. just download the sata driver, a slipstreaming program called nlite.

1 download and install nlite
2 put in your xp install cd, and run nlite, when nlite asks, browse to the i386 folder (your installation files)
3 you will have lots of options to choose from, but for this purpose, choose "add drivers" and select the location of the gateway drivers (c:\cabs\something) i think.
4 finish and burn the cd. then use it to install windows xp.

this little guide isnt step by step, but with a little trial and error you should get by

I had the same problem to make dual boot on a vista loaded laptop with XP. I use nlight to splitstream the RAD and it was successfull.
  • Try this link, there is a very nice article regarding this problem with pictures.
  • You can also try bootdisk to make a bootable CD then start with this CD and try to run your setup. Click here for bootdisk
Please post your feedback.
