I can hear the effects while I'm recording, but they never play back. I've got the effect assigned to the input I'm using, and I'm only trying to record one track at a time while using the effect. Is my machine messed up or are the effects just for sending through to another recording/playback device? Thanks thanks in advance to anyone who's got the answer!

Turn on the effect for the appropriate input or turn on the reverb. For the reverb you must turn up at least one tracks (the track you are using) effects send together with the Master effects return. The volume of the multi effect may need adjusting or the parameter of the effect is so low that the effect is too subtle to be noticed. Multi effect page 60 of the manual. I'm not familiar with the Tascam DP-01 but many multi-track recorders don't commit effects to the track until the mixdown phase. The thinking being that you cannot eliminate a "bad choice" effect once it's down to tape (old school term) and so they allow adding the audio tweaks at the final stages of recording. Here they hope you can appreciate the entire mix and then decide what sweetners to add.
You assign the effects basically the exact same way you assigned the channels to inputs, except you press and hold the "MICX4" button and press the "Select" key to the channel (or channels) you want to assign the effects to. Once you assign the effects to the channel, you can edit to the effect you want, and edit the values of the effect.
I'm assuming you are plugging the left and right outputs from the karaoke machine into input A and B of the Tascam to record the stereo output of the Karioke. The Tascam works with mono only (you recreate the stereo mix at mixdown or when bouncing mono tracks together with the panning set). Therefore you should be assigning inputs A and B separately. You could press assign A and then the record button above track 1 and then press assign B and the record button above track 2. Then arm tracks 1 and 2 (by pressing record above each). When you then press play and record together you'll record input A onto track 1 and input B onto track 2.
You seem to be aware already that the multi-effect acts like a traditional 'insert effect' on a mixer and as such can only be applied to one track/channel at a time (multiple effects / single channel). The problem you're asking about seems to be that the effect is not 'printing' during the recording of your track. Obviously the effect can't 'go away' after recording so it would appear that your guitar effect isn't being recorded (only monitored) when the track is being laid down.
My initial guess here would be that while recording you've been assigning the multi-effect to a channel vs an input. That would explain the effect being audible while monitoring, but the input still being recorded dry even though the effect is heard through the monitors.
So to get this working the way you expect you'd want to insure that you are indeed assigning the multi-effect to input from which your guitar is coming, rather than the track on which it is getting recorded.
Having said that, actually recording dry (like you are doing) and then applying the multi-effect to a new track via a 'bounce' is the way a lot of people (myself included) choose to accomplish this anyway. That way you preserve a dry track and can go back and 'redo' the effect (or choose a different effect instead) later on. It does however introduce another step and use up another virtual track (but the 2488 has 250 of them available which si a big reason the 2488 is so competitive).
The easiest way to record using an external Lexicon effects unit (without an external mixer) is to connect your mic onto one of the 2488's inputs and assign that input to a channel strip (track). You should have the 2488 sends (output) going to the Lexicon's inputs. Then connect the Lexicon outputs back into another set of inputs on your 2488 and assign those inputs to two empty channel strips (tracks).
Then you will have to take that channel that has your mic input assigned to it and press send and set the levels there to send the signal out the sends (to the Lexicon).
Now you have a channel strip assigned to the mic input which contains your dry signal, and you have the two inputs returning from the Lexicon which contains your wet or effected signal.
You then have some options. You can control the amount of effected signal you hear while recording by adjusting the faders of the two wet tracks and you can either record the dry signal or the wet signal (or both) onto separate tracks.
Typically when recording the singer will want to hear an effect (say reverb) on his voice, but the engineer wants to record only the dry track at recording time (because effects can always be added later, but they can't be taken out). To accomplish this you would use the setup above, but only arm the mic input track for recording. In this way the singer hears the reverb, but only the dry vocals get recorded and the engineer can add reverb to that track again later as desired (and mix it back with the dry vocal etc).
On the other hand if you want to record only the effected signal you would simply arm the two channels to which the inputs coming back from your Lexicon are assigned for recording. This will get you a recording of the effected signal only.
Hope this helps you do what you are trying to do.
To use the Lexicon as a 'send effect' (which is what it is) you'll need to connect the effect sends from the back of the 2488 to the inputs on your Lexicon. Then connect the outputs from the Lexicon into two inputs on the 2488. Then assign those inputs to tracks.
You've got to select the previously recorded track(s) where you want to add reverb or other effects (by pressing the select key) and then press the 'send' key to get into the 'send effect' screen. Here you can adjust the amount of signal is sent from that channel to either of the effect sends (typically you might want to send one track of a stereo set of tracks out eff 1 and send the other track out eff 2).
Pre, post or off will determine whether the fader affects the signal being sent or not and the loop setting on the top of this screen is for the internal effects.
Once you've got this set up the way you want you just arm the tracks where the Lexicon output is coming into the 2488 for recording, mute whatever you don't want to hear and you can bounce record the raw signal through the Lexicon and record (print) the effected signal on the tracks you've armed.
Yes. Rather than pressing the track SELECT button to assign the effect, press one of the SOURCE buttons to the left of the EFFECTS. This will record the effect HARD to the track as oopposed to SOFT. SOFT being that the effect will NOT be recorded whereas HARD means it IS recorded and will be there anytime you play the track. NOTE: Just make sure that's the effect you want as it is then part of the track.
To use the maximizer as a send effect, connect the effect send (1 or 2) to the input on your maximizer, then connect the output from your maximizer back into any input A thru G on your 2488. You then assign the track you want to maximize to the correct send (1 or 2) using the send key and then assign the input to a track to record to.
To use a maximizer as an input effect (assuming guitar) simply plug yoiur guitar into the maximizer and then patch the maximizer to input H (Hi Z input of the front panel of the 2488). Assign input H to a track to record and this will record the maximized input signal.
