Question about Briggs & Stratton Briggs Stratton Intek V - Twin Vertical Ohv Engine with Electric Start 22 Hp, 1" X 3 5/32" Shaft, ModelNo. 44K777 - 0027 - E1

1 Answer

Engine will not crank with every try.

B&S Model 445877, type 0827 b1, 20 hours on it. Some times it seems that the starter, even after six tries, does not have enough torque to turn the engine .Five minutes later it spins the engine ok. Is there a compression release on this engine? Most of the time it starts and runs just fine Does this engine have a compression release feature? The reason for the question is that often (not always) the starter doesn't seem to have enough torque to turn the motor enough to start it. It does move the engine slightly with each try. The battery has always had a battery maintainer connected to it continually when not in use. Oil is 10w-30. Valves adjusted by by sears warranty service

Still sounds like a valve adjustment problem and as for relying on a Sears serviceman.....well. lol I just did a valve readjust on basically the same engine with identical symtoms and it starts fine now. As for the 10w-30, Briggs recommends 30w in the warmer climates.

Sounds like you have several problems.
If the engine will not crank, do you have power on the purple wire on the small starter terminal when the key switch is in the start position ?

Have a '94 S-10 Blazer Tahoe 4X4 and it starts

My suspicion is a starter going bad. Sometimes when starters get old and worn they will start good when the engine is cold but not when the engine is warmed up. Did you perhaps notice that lately is seemed to drag when you tried starting, especially warm or it seemed to crank a little slower? I'd replace the starter. Hope this helps.

When ignition switch is turned to start I get a small click but starter does not engage

Hi,

If the starter or solenoid clicks but nothing else happens when you attempt to start the engine, there may not be enough amps to spin the starter. Or the starter may be bad. A poor battery cable, solenoid or ground connection, or high resistance in the solenoid itself may be the problem. A voltage check at the solenoid will reveal if battery voltage is passing through the ignition switch circuit. If the solenoid or relay is receiving battery voltage but is not closing or passing enough amps from the battery to spin the starter motor, the solenoid ground may be bad or the contacts in the solenoid may be worn, pitted or corroded. If the starter cranks when the solenoid is bypassed, a new solenoid is needed, not a starter.
Most engines need a cranking speed of 200 to 300 rpm to start, so if the starter is weak and can't crank the engine fast enough to build compression, the engine won't start. In some instances, a weak starter may crank the engine fast enough but prevent it from starting because it draws all the power from the battery and does not leave enough for the injectors or ignition system.

If the lights dim and there is little or no cranking when you attempt to start the engine, the starter may be locked up, dragging or suffering from high internal resistance, worn brushes, shorts or opens in the windings or armature. A starter current draw test will tell you if the starter is pulling too many amps.

A good starter will normally draw 60 to 150 amps with no load on it, and up to 200 amps or more while cranking the engine. The no load amp draw depends on the rating of the starter while the cranking amp draw depends on the displacement and compression of the engine. Always refer to the OEM specs for the exact amp values. Some "high torque" GM starters, for example, may have a no load draw of up to 250 amps. Toyota starters on four-cylinder engines typically draw 130 to 150 amps, and up to 175 amps on six-cylinder engines.

Hope this helps,Good luck!!

(04 ford explorer xlt) left lights on for about 1-2 hours without noticing. car wouldn't start of course. tried jump starting it. it only cranked over 3 times. then after that it just wouldn't do anything...

HAVE YOU CHECKED ALL THE MAIN JUMBO FUSES ON THE ENGINE CONPARTMETN YET??? SEEMS YOU CAUSED A GOOD SHORT. TEST ALL THEM SPECIALLY THE IGN AND THE ECU ONES. THOSE FUSES DO BURN DUE TO INPROPER JUMPSTARTS HOPE THIS HELPS.

Batt. and alt. only last 6 months or so then won't start car

Ok, if the cranking amps is like 70AMPs or 100 AMPS as measured by an inductive ammeter on the battery cable when starting, and it does NOT start, then it's a bad starter.

However, if it does start, that's normal.

On a car that old, I would check that the battery cable ends are squeaky clean, wire brushed, or even replaced if cleaning is not possible.

Usually, a battery that is tested good will be good under a load test.

Also, try to use an ammeter to find out if there is a drain on the battery above .2 A while it sits there turned off. This could lead to a solution if you investigate where a short may be.

What kind of battery can I use for my 2002 model Ford Escape? My car is a 4X4, 2.6 engin size

You sate you have the 2.6 liter engine. Is it four or six cylinders? The number of cylinders is also used to determine the correct battery amps. The following information is for the four cylinder engine...You can use any battery with at least 590 cold cranking amps, 620 cold cranking amps, or 720 cold cranking amps. The following is for the six cylinder engine...You can use any battery with at least 590 cold cranking amps, 620 cold cranking amps or 720 cold cranking amps. The auto parts store can help you decide the best battery for your vehicle.

450 out of 600 what? sounds like you have somthing drawing power need an amp meter. remove key and leave window down. disconnect negitive battery cable and connect meter between the negitive cable and negitive termainal on the battery should see around 2.5 milliamp draw or less may take 1/2 hour to get to this point. also if this vechile is not driven often this could be the problem

90 jeep starting problem

Try replacing the wire from the positive battery cable to the small terminal it is attched to. It is the smaller gauge wire that is attched to the battery terminal. Be sure to use the right gauge, don't over or undersize it. I had this problem and it did'nt stop until I changed this. Without this wire in good condition, the starter will crank too slow or not crank at all, mimicking other problems (like bad battery, bad starter , etc.). Post if it works.
