Question about eMachines W5243 Refurbished AMD Desktop Computer - AMD Athlon 64 3800+ 2.4GHz , 1GB DDR2, 250GB

No dial tone being recognized.

I have a Emachine desktop
and I had no problems with it worked great and all till recently of course.
I tested my phone lines with a regularphone and made calls in and out with no problem. the line i bought a brand new one of good quality so then i went and tested the modem by queing it , it shows it is working, no conflict and nothing bad with it. I have uninstalled the modem , reinstalled it along with the drivers and I still get the error no dialtone!
my modem is an internal soft modem and the installation it self along with the drivers is on same disk i use to install my windows vista home program i have. i can hear the line pick up but as it shows it is dialing out there is no dial tone as it says. but if i use a phone i have dial tone . right now am useing my laptop and i plugged in the phone line i have bene usieng all this time for my desktop and it works on here so i have no clue what it could be. yes my connection is dialup. only thing i can think of is 2 weeks ago one of my older teens installed a bluetooth soft ware from IoGear and i uninstalled it last weekend so it was imediately after that it began the problems. so I crashed the comp and reinstalled the vista and windows program and still have this same problem.

    ok thank you I will try this . i'll have to download the updated drivers onto a card from the laptop then try to download them to the desk top . I will check back and let you know how it went..

Try downloading updated drivers for your modem and...please make sure the phone cord is plugged into the line side and not the side with the pic of a phone on the modem.

Plug a phone into the phone jack and make sure you get dial tone.

Handset doesn't have dial tone. says check TEL line.


For this type of problem, you need to isolate the issue. It could be the phone, the inside wiring, or the outside wiring. I like to use an old rotary phone for testing but any basic corded phone should work. Get a new RJ-11 phone cable as well.

Unplug the base unit and plug in the test phone to that jack. Check if you get a dial tone. (Try a new cable if the initial one doesn't work.) If your test phone has a dial tone, then the problem is isolated to the cordless phone. (If the test phone works with the new cable, do check if Uniden works with that cable.) Modern phones are not designed to be fixed by the consumer. If the phone is under warranty, contact Uniden Customer Service. (Otherwise decide if the costs are worthwhile for you; there will be a significant delay before the phone is returned/replaced.)

If you do not get the dial tone, you need to track down the wiring issue. Next move to another jack on the phone line and check if there is a dial tone on your test phone. If there is a dial tone, you have isolated the problem to the jack or the wiring to the jack.

If there is still no dial tone, find where your telephone service comes in to your building. If you can, open the box. Determine the type of connection used there. If you are lucky, you will find a RJ-11 jack for your phone line. Plug in your test phone and check for a dial tone. If there is no dial tone, contact your telephone provider. They will fix this outside problem for free.

If the connection is not a RJ-11 jack, you will need to call the telephone company so that they can determine if the problem is inside or outside.

If you do have a dial tone, then the problem is with the inside wiring. Inspect the visible wires for damage. Open the faceplates for the jacks and check for loose wires. There are two types of connectors. Screw type connectors need the wire stripped back a little then wrap around the screw and tighten. The other type is a punchdown jack. To repair a loose wire in this, you will need a punchdown tool. These are often available in hardware/home improvement stores in the wiring section. http://www.lanshack.com/wire_phone_jack.aspx has clear pictures of the wire color to pin pattern.

You may want a professional to check the wires inside the walls. Your telephone provider will do this for a fee.

The phone lights up when put to charge also the red light on the base,, but when the phone line is connected it wont work ..What do u think is the problem?


The battery in the handset could be bad . First I would test that the base unit is recieving dial tone by pressing speaker button on base unit. If there is dial tone then problem is in handset or in base unit communication to handset. Try resetting power to base unit. Check manual for any re-initialization procedure. If the base unit is not receiving dial tone then I would test that the phone line is delivering dial tone to the base unit by connecting a known good phone to the line cord. If the dial tone is not present , problem could be in line cord from outlet, outlet, building wiring, or service provider.

Phone has worked ok till saturday ,now no dial tone ,if i ring my phone with my mobile i can here it ringing but no sound coming from my phone , i plugged in another phone and still the same ,please help...


No dial tone on telephone set? could mean alot of things. Phone went bad, jack is bad(test in different jack or from a network interface, either inside or outside. depending what your dwelling is)
Just to point out a fact, when dial from your mobile to that number that has no dialtone, that ringing sound you hear is from the central office that is putting out that ringing, it has nothing to do with the phone you're trying to ring to. You would hear the ringing sound, even if all your phones were unplugged from every jack in your dwelling.

I would contact your phone provider. It could be a coinceidence that the dial tone stopped working.
DSL does not require dial tone to work.

U need to double confirm the phone line whether got dial tone or not. What u can do is to plug the phone line to a single line phone. If dial tone is available, u can able to make call.

Changing from pulse to tone dial


For the GE electric 2.4 GHZ phone where there is no switch, you have to press the program button and hold until it beeps (talk button will start flashing), then press the tone (star) button and program again. It will beep for confirmation

When I tried to go online my Compaq Presario SR110nx gave error 680


Error 680--- No dial tone
A) Test modem by dialling a number through HyperTerminal or phone dialler. This will test the Modem without using Dialup Networking.
B) Make sure you are using the correct and/or original cable. Some modems used specific wiring which is not compatible with standard modem cables.
C) Check that you phone line is working with a normal phone.
D) Make sure the phone line you are trying to dial on is not a non-standard line, this can cause problems also.
E) If all the above are OK then get a new modem or test in a different location.
