Hello folks,

Sounds like both units are suffering from hardware failure. The most likely culprits are failed USB/1394 to IDE/SATA circuitry or failed drives.

The simplest test/solution is to buy a new, empty, drive enclosure and transfer your drive into it. Test that enclosure, if it works, the drive is fine your done.

If it doesn't the failure is in the drive itself and if you have important files on the drive you will require the help of a pro. State your region and city and I will give you a recommendation for a professional data recovery service.

XP is a dead OS.
100% dead. and not supported now. by MS or HP.
but XP needs SP3, or USB will be bad
XP always had bad USB for years until , all patches were done.
The USB on XP are horrible.
you need good USB so all devices are PnP recognized
and negotiated currents (power) is working
and USB2 currents are weaker than USB 3.

Have only just decided to install my new Iomega 500 GB usb 2.0 hard drive and I have mislaid my quick install guide. I have an Apple imac can you help please

Just connect the AC power to the IOMEGA, and the USB cable between the IOMEGA and a USB port on your computer. It is a "plug-and-play" device, and so Apple OS X should automatically recognize it.

Vista stops recognizing external hard drive

This doesn't sound like an OS issue. This appears to be more an issue of the connection to the hard drive. The USB cable likely isn't the culprit, nor the laptop USB inputs. If the drive was ever dropped or the cable gets removed and reattached often to the actual enclosure, you might be looking at a bad port on the enclosure. This isnt a lost cause. You can always buy a hard drive enclosure from newegg and move the drive from the IOMEGA to the new enclosure. You can get a new enclosure for $15. Just because the USB port is bad, it doesnt mean the data is gone and the hard drive cant be used.

Iomega 250 GB external stopped working

This is really not a solution, but you should all try to connect your iomega to a imac, and use the Disk Utility (in Utilities folder), if you have any luck the hard drive will be recognized and you will be able to format it

I have the 80GB WD passport and it suddenly stopped working one day.  The unit lights up but nothing else.  Finally I cracked the case open and found, as I suspected, that the drive is simply a SATA laptop drive with a SATA-to-USB conversion card built in.  I suspected that the card was **** so I disconnected it and used a USB hard drive adapter (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=3770&name=USB_Hard_Drive_Adapter) and I can read/write to the drive just fine.  Best part is that the adapter I use has its own power supply so I'm not pulling juice through the USB cable for a SATA drive.
Even though mine "works" again I don't recommend these drives to anyone.  They're just not sturdy enough or well designed.

If you have a USB or Firewire cable you can just plug it into the USB port or firewire port in your computer and plug the power cord in if you have one and it should start recognizing it.
