Question about Kenwood VR-6070 Receiver

Kenwood VR-6070: Broken volume knob; will IR sensor still work?

Hi FixYa experts,

Just an FYI: I am a software engineer with some electronics background and an amateur radio license. I can read schematics and know Ohm's Law, and some of the other basics of electronics, and can test things with a multimeter, if you can respond.

I recently purchased a Kenwood VR-6070 receiver used. It has a problem, namely the volume knob (and its attendent buttons beneath, Mute and AV Aux) do not work; I think because at one point in the receivers life someone stood the receiver up with the front-face plate pointing down, which put 40lbs of pressure directly on the volume knob! The remote is broken too (I think, I tried two sets of fresh batteries and nothing happened; haven't checked to see if the IR LED blinks in a camcorder yet, will do that next), so I cannot adjust the volume level! Otherwise, the receiver seems to work fine.

Since the receiver seems to fine otherwise, here's my questions:
1) I suspect that the "volume control assembly" internal to the unit is broken, since the buttons beneath the volume knob are broken too. I'd like to know: What else is attached to the "volume control assembly"?

2) If I went out and picked up a new remote that could send out the IR signals that this receiver needed (say a universal Logitech Harmony remote), would it work? I ask this b/c an electrical technician friend of mine suspected that the receiver's IR sensor is on the same "volume control assembly".

I guess I'm kinda hoping for someone who has access to the service manual to help me to know whether I'd have to replace the "volume control assembly" or whether I can get by with just a remote.

Sheep responding to my own question,

Turns out #2 works, I got a universal remote and it can control the volume.

Maybe this info would help others with similar problems.

Could be a Japanese system, that's the way it works, unless u going to switch the outer wires on the volume controls, then it would work clockwise, that if its not soldered on the circuit board.

Problem for Kenwood VR-405. Subwoofer has no sound coming from it. Sub is set to "on" in the menu and all speakers work in test mode. I have tried hooking devices individually with RCA's and also just...

How I fixed this was to get a can of electrical contact cleaner. Any auto parts store or electronics store will carry it. Take the cover off and remove the volume knob. It's responsible for the output volume to the sub. Pry the four silver tabs open and pull apart the knob. You should see some corrosion on the contacts. Use a fingernail file to clean them off now clean it with the contact cleaner. Put it back together and you are ready to go.

Kenwood VR-409 surround system clicks off when sound is turned up

Assuming you aren't turning the volume knob past half way before the problem occurs, you most likely have a damaged speaker cable or a bad driver in one of your loudspeakers. (Once your volume knob has reached about half way the amplifier is producing its maximum efficiency.)

Note the position of your volume control when the clipping occurs, then remove one speaker at a time and raise the volume. If you identify a speaker as the culprit, inspect or replace the wire running to it and try it again. If you aren't able to find a bad speaker, the problem is internal and will need to be fixed at a repair shop.

Good Luck,

IR receiver on unit not working?

Sounds to me like the issue is the rx in the unit. It can be fixed with very little work if you can locate the part. Let me take a look and see if I can locate the part number for you. Although I have to say that Kenwwod can keep a tight lip on their parts lists.

IR Reliability--Intermittent

The Kenwood VR-510 does indeed respond to IR remotes. I now use a Logitech Harmony H659 which is IR only.
Your issue is a problem with the VR-510, actualy the whole series had a problem with cold solder joints on an assembly behind the front panel. Fix that and fix the problem. It frustrated me for 5 yrs.
