Did that and it's still giving me the error message.

  • talrasha06 May 28, 2009

Yea I did that as well. When I right clicked on the desktop it didn't even have 256 as an option. It was already on the highest bit.

The game is Very low resolution game which can only be played in Win xp and below widow. And your configuration is too high for the game thats why it can't be played.

It should be working now, but mega big & ugly.
Set your monitor resolution to next higher setting. If that works, keep futzing with it till it's to your liking.

My monitor gives 16-bit color at 640x480, but will only offer 256 colors at 1024x768 -- and only displays 16 colors when I select that... In order to access resolution options, I have to go into Advanced...

The monitor has no influence here - something is wrong with your video card: either its driver is missing (or corrupted) or the video chip has failed.
Uninstall all the drivers for the video(except the generic VGA one), from Programs and Device Manager
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows7/f/open-device-manager-windows-7.htm
and reboot several times then go to Dell
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs
select your pc and get the correct driver.
If that doesn't fixes it then the video chip has failed, you will need to buy a new video card.

I can't run rise of nations: thrones and patriots although I got enough total memory to run it. 16.0 mb required I've got 256 mb. I've also got 3-d on.

Do run or keep any application in open state while launching the game. If possible turn off the antivirus while playing the game.

What driver do i need to get 256 color on my computer?

256 colors is a quite old settings for a computer. All modern monitors/laptops come with 16 and 32bit colors, which is FAR more advanced than the old school 256 colors.

There's no driver required to support that setting as it's relatively useless and antiquated, unless you're in a situation where you need to run a program/game in 256 color mode, which you can alter by right clicking the icon, selecting properties, then the compatibility tab and checking the "Run in 256 colors " box.

Hope I was of assistance :)

Changing my colour on desktop

You'll have to run the game in compatibility mode, with the color depth set to 256 colors.

You do this by right clicking on the executable of your game. click on Properties. Compatibility tab. Click the check to run compatibilty w/ Window 98, and set the color depth to 256 Color. That should work! Happy gaming.

Actually it was quite easy. I rebooted my computer in "safe mode" by restarting it and pressing the F8 key. At the start up windows gives you an option to toggle down to "enable VGA mode" and select it. After that, my computer recognized my monitor and it has worked fine ever since!
