Laptop shutting down by itself

I have a HP Pavilion dv5000 and it has recently started shutting down by itself. It just shuts off instantly. Sometimes it also freezes so i have to restart it. Is this a hardware problem or could it be a virus/software issue?
thank you

it shuts down...without any "windows is shutting down" notice window. other times it freezes and then i have to restart

  • nmjvans May 28, 2009

i did think the first couple times it happened that its a over heating problem because the laptop was realy hot in the corner where the fan is,but other times the laptop isnt hot at all, might still be it though so will look into it thank you.

No i am not aware of any sensor and i also havent let me laptop fall causing any possible damage. the problem has only ever happened while the laptop was stationary

Hi.
It sounds to me like the machine is overheating, and is mainly because of dust.
The best way to deal with this is to buy a can of compressed air and give short blast through the air vents and the CPU fan (located under the laptop), once the dust has been cleared out it should stay on for much longer.
Another bit of advice is not to use the laptop in bed, if you are make sure there is a flow of air passing through and that its not sat on any quilt covers.

Good luck and thanks for choosing FixYa!!

I had the same problem but it turned out to be a simple one. First of all have you ever replaced your battery? If the battery is going bad it will shut off of course. But if the battery is bad and you use the power adapter it will also shut off. Remove the battery and use the power adapter only and it should stay on. The power adapter charges the battery under internal power management but if the battery is no good it can not complete the circuit. By removing the battery you bypass the recharge circuit in exchange for direct power.

Does it have a sensor to protect the hard drive if it falls? This could cause it to lock up or shut down as you describe. It could also be a loose battery...

Does the problem occur when you are moving it, or also when it is sitting still?

Battery with HP Pavillion DV5000 won't work. Do I need to replace the battery or is there a battery charger I could use to recharge the battery? Dianne

You can order a power cable online or pick one up at your local computer store. They should run between $80-150. The battery itself is very expensive to purchase but is rechargeable.

Standy By Going off/Computer shutting down

The presentation power scheme is used when you are giving a briefing using the PC as your slide show. So the presentation power scheme will never shut off the monitor or the hard drive, don't want it to shut down in the middle of a briefing. However, leaving it in that state for long periods of time may cause the CPU to overheat and shut itself down for protection. A better scheme for quick boot up would be Home/Office. Turn monitor off after 20 minutes and "never" for hard disk. This way it will save energy (therefore heat) and you will have a quick boot up. If you are using XP Pro, there is also an option to automatically put it in standby when you close the lid of your monitor. Hope this helps. If you have any questions let me know... Hp webcam

I had this problem myself. After a LONG talk with an HP technician we finally sorted it out.

It was actually down to several programs trying to use the camera at the same time, mainly instant messengers, so the first thing to do is to shut down all instant messengers. If possible, from their preferences stop them running when the machine starts.

Once you've done that, try the HP Quickplay (any of the little buttons) and go to the camera from there. It should work. Sometimes a reboot is required if a particularly obstinate instant messenger has activated the camera but not turned it on, and won't release it.

Shutting off

i have the same problem...laptop randomly shuts down, but its even done it within a minute of turning it on so i don't think its a heat issue. Sometimes it'll run for over an hour with no problem and never shut down, but other times it randomly shuts down sometimes within a minute, sometimes maybe 10 mins, sometimes 30 mins or more ...its maddening! i'd love to find a solution if anyone's found one. Thanks.
