Question about General Electric Microwave Oven

1 Answer

Sparks ae flying in my microwave

Sparks are flying in my GE Convection Microwave Oven model JES1290SK . There is a piece of cardboard on the inside right wall, about 3x5, which is hard to clean due to it being posterboard.I was told by GE that this piece can not be replaced and if the sparks are coming from it, not to use it. It is barely one year old and past the one year warranty. What a I supposed to do with this;throw it away?? Any sugestions? Thanks, Sandi

Do I understand that you think the sparks are coming from that piece of cardboard because it's dirty and the grease/whatever is burning off?

Does this piece of carboard have a silver colored coating on it?

GE in essence says it is unrepareable and insafe. I suggest that would be saying it is trash.I don't know what that carboard is, possibly indulation? Ot may have /be a a oiece oce of laminated metal like some paper plates have..Not replaceable is a poor answer. Call them back and make a fuss. If it's not too far over warranty, they may work with you to shut you up.. oops, sorry, to pacify you.
:-) Good luck.

Does the convection work? If so likely you need a magnetron If the control panel is having problems then it needs to be repaired or replaced. It could be just a stuck relay inside so a firm hit may release it

Microwave sparks

If it sparks inside the oven then look inside for any powder paint missing... if so discard. If you has metal shelves or tin foil then don't put metal in when on microwave setting. Some of these metal shelves are for a microwave that is also a convection oven but only in the convection oven setting.

I don't know about a recall, but if your unit is under warranty parts and labour are included in most cases.

My microwave/convection oven (a GE unit model JES1290SK) started beeping every few seconds and displaying F6 on the control panel. I unplugged it and waited several minutes and when plugged in it displays...

The technical sheets in my files do not list F6 on the error code chart for GE microwaves.

Generally, these are the error codes possible on GE microwaves:

F1 open thermal sensor (convection models)
F2 shorted thermal sensor (convection models)
F3 key panel shorted for more than 60 seconds
F4 open humidity sensor
F5 shorted humidity sensor

There should be a "mini-manual" (technical sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, & testing.

We have a ge microwave. Sparks came out of

Quite often this is due to grease or food particles stuck to the inside of the oven or stuck on or behind the mica waveguide cover.

The waveguide cover is usually about the size of a playing card and often held in place by a plastic rivet.

Sometimes it is the ceiling of the oven.

Your owner's manual may address this. You can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here.

It can be fragile, and the metal edges of the oven behind it can be sharp, so be careful!

The cover and the metal behind it should be cleaned with a mild, non-ammonia cleaner.

If the cavity metal of the oven is chipped or charred, it will have to be sanded smooth and clean.

Then you can apply some high-temperature appliance paint, available from places like Wal-Mart or Lowe's.

If your waveguide cover is burned, it will need to be replaced.

GE JVM1190WY 003 Microwave Convection sparks

The problem that you are having is that the magnetron inside the microwave is shorting out to ground and it will find the shortest path to reach whatever has metal in it. Replacing the magnetron will solve your problem altogether and you need not do anything else different and continue using your metal racks.
