Homelite curved shaft timmer line problem

My homelite 26cc curved shaft trimmer line never expands... it always just cuts off causing me to stop, take it off, put it back on. I line up the openings and tighten the nut but it never automatically extends the line... ideas?

if I take a brand new spool, screw it on, align the openings and use it, it doesn't extend the line and it just snaps off. I then need to unscrew it all and extend it again and then it just cuts off again..

Is it a bump and feed trimmer?

Be sure you have the line wound the opposite way the head turns.

Hate to give you bad news, but weed whackers were invented by a committee of sadists.

You can spend the rest of your upright life trying to get one to properly function again once it fails -- my advice is to give your current machine to a very good handyman/woman and buy a new one.

It sounds like its a bump feed which they usually are, try turning on the machine and bump the head off the ground. If this fails to work try rewinding the line on tightly and neatly with no parts of the line crossing over as this could knot it. Quick tip most heads have a arrow pointing the direction to wind the line.

Let me know if that works.

So, is this trimmer suppose to feed the string automatically? If not, then it sounds like the string is wound up on the spool the wrong direction.

Homelite trimmer, gas, string - y is the string wrapping itself around the head of the trimmer?

The line on my new 26cc Homelite would also feed out by itself. That started me thinking the line was wound backwards. I wrapped the line in the opposite direction as was shown on the bump feed reel and now the dang thing works although the bump feed needs to be "bumped" pretty hard to work. Is it possible that the reel was manufactured with the (string direction) arrows pointing the wrong direction? The new 26cc unit is also underpowered compared to my older 25cc trimmer.

Here is a diagram of it. It is reverse threaded so you have to turn it like you was tightening it to loosen it. Clockwise looking at it from the bottom of the head. But there is a clutch that will let the whole thing turne. The best way is to remove the shaft from the weedeater and hold the shaft with some vice grips. Or you may be able to hold it right above the head, before the shaft tube.
