Question about Brother HL 5140 Laser Printer

Brother HL5140 won't print

Our school has a Brother HL5140 laser printer.  I was in the middle of a project when the yellow toner light and red status light came on.  I thought it would be something as easy as adding new toner, but that's not the case.  I sent back one new toner thinking maybe that was defective, but the second new toner made no difference.  I've wasted hours putting the toner cartridge in and out of the machine, cleaning the wire, etc. (carefully following the steps recommended with the toner).  Our computer teacher couldn't get it working.  It will be time to print the children's report cards.  Please help! Red status light and toner light are on (HL-5140 printers). I have replaced the toner cartridge with two different new Brother toner cartridges, cleaned the printer as per the user's manual. Unplugged the printer from power and computer overnight reconnected and restarted printer and computer from cold state, reinstalled printer drivers, etc. Nothing works! and now... another HL-5140 in the office has same symptoms with the same results.

    Clarification on Problem Submitted by Kay - We buy new toner cartridges, Brother brand name only. I have been a hardware repair tech (i.e. computers, printers, laptops, scanners, readers, etc.) for about 15 years now. I have never repaired Brother printers and therefore have none of their repair manuals in my library. My boss bought these printers... I had no input. I just have to support them now. Frankly, I've tried everything I know to try with this machine, short of completely disassembling it and testing each electronic component. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Sadly this happens all the time - we have about 12 of these printers and 2 have the same problem at this moment and the only fix we have found previously is to replace the drum unit with a brand new one which is hardly economical - indeed the machines are all NHS funded and often the solution has been to throw the printers with this problem away and we have a few defunct ones piled in a corner because of this - if anyone knows why and how this happens ( the tech dept locally has no ideas but just wupply an new printer as they are cheap) I would be very interested also - changing the drum and cartride to a partly used one from a different machine does nothing at all either so it has to be something to do with the chip in the new drum resetting the machine but how and why is beyond us. In every case the printer prints perfectly before the fault and after the change to a new drum so I can only assume it is a way of generating more drum sales??

    Have I think found a solution to this and similar problems on the 5240s - has certainly worked on all our previously scrapped machines

    Here it is:

    1. Insert drum and toner, when red toner light flashes, open front lap.

    2. Take out the toner and drum and press go once.

    3. Insert toner and drum back into printer and press go once again.

    4. Close front flap and should be working.

    If this doesn’t work try:

    1. Insert drum and toner, when red toner light flashes, open front lap.

    2. Take out the toner and drum and press go until all 4 lights above the go button have flashed in sequence.

    3. Insert toner and drum back into printer and press go until all 4 lights above the go button have flashed in sequence.

    4. Close front flap and should be working.

Try this Toner reset sequence (worked on Brother HL-5350DN)
With Printer off open the toner door
Hold the Go button as you turn the printer on.
All lights will turn on. Keep holding Go until status light goes off.
Press the Go button 2x.
The Paper, Drum & Toner light will come on
Press Go 6x
Status light will turn red
Close the front.

Hi, if you status led become red and only that light is on must be 1 of the following problems:

1.- Front Cover is opened
2.- Memory Full
3.- Option Tray is installed too much
4.- Print Overun

Well, if the toner light is on, you're probably out of toner and the only reason it ran, was because it was low but not completely depleted.

Try new toner drum off of Ebay or Amazon for the best prices for your brother printer.

How to find number of pages printed from a brother HL 5250N

Turn on the printer.
Once it is on and the status light is on, press the Go button 6 time. Status light turns yellow and printer will print off internal configuration - including number of pages printed. Should be 3 pages. This report also includes the percentage used of toner, drum, laser, and fuser.

HL-5140 Brother laser printer red status light remains on.

The red lite indicates one of the following needs to be looked at:

Cover open (Front cover) Close the front cover.

Cover open (Jam clear cover) Close the jam clear cover of the fuser unit.

Memory full - Press the go button.

Print overrun - Press the go button.

Clean drum unit - Clean the corona wire.
