Re: Password Security

I agree instructions are not well explained.

Please download the manual from here

and go to page 17

When you are in the same setting page with your router, change the SSID with a name that you use to reconize your network like cwistabelle or my_nice_network

Channel you can live the one proposed by the router

Security select WPA-PSK

Encription select TKIP

Preshare Key mode select ASCII

Preshare Key enter a password from 8 to 60 letter and number, for example cwistabelle10 or something easy for you to remember.

IMPORTANT never put a password exactly the same like your SSID!

Try to connect with your wireless computer and remember to put the password that you just set up.

Let me know if OK.

What is my wep key

A WEP key is a security code generated in your wireless router.
You need this code in order to connect to your security enabled, wireless network.
If you log into your router you should be able to find it in the wireless security settings.
It can be a word, phrase, or a bunch of random characters.

I cn not find my wep code

Hi bobraywhite,

Try to locate the wep code underneath the router. If you cant find it I suggest trying the following steps:

1. Use the Internet Explorer browser.

2. Type the following IP address in your address bar: , you will get a login window. Your user name can be blank and the password is admin. If you have trouble logging in use the user name: admin, and the password is: password.

3. Click on "wireless" then "wireless settings" or "wireless security." Toward the bottom of the screen look for "Security Encryption (WEP) key," if you see more than one WEP key use the first one listed.

Hope it helps.

I installed this router a couple of years ago without security password. Now I want to add a security code to it. How do I do this?

I am not an expert on this issue but I might be able to give you some direction.
You need to log into your router with internet explorer.
Do not use wireless to log into your router use an ethernet cable on one of the ports (1-4).
address is
username: admin
password: "leave blank"
Select the Wireless on the left hand side menu.
On that page you should see Security field, I suggest to select WPA as the security protocol.
Enter your shared secret phrase. I am not sure whether you need to enter an IP address. I would try without. Now when you connect to your wireless network you will be prompted to enter your secret phrase (WPA).

Need to know the IP to secure my router

You need to log into the wireless router either by a computer that successfully connects wirelessly or by physically connecting with an ethernet cable. Once connected, log into the router by open a web browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Apple Safari), and typing the router's address (usually or into the Address (or URL) line. The default usernameand password is usually "admin" & "admin" or "admin" & "password". Once successfully logged in, look for a tab or link that says "Wireless" or "Security". You'll be able to change whether security is enabled or disabled, and the password associated with it. Your security options are WEP or WPA (or WPA-PSK). WPA-PSK is the most secure, but WEP is also an acceptable choice. Select the security option of your choice and either enter text into the passphrase generator or choose your own password and type it into one of the security key text fields. If you use a password that is not a plain english combination of letters and numbers, be sure to write it down so that you can enter it as needed on other wireless devices that need to access your router (ie-pda phones, game consoles, laptops, desktops, etc). Be sure to save changes so that the security settings and password is saved.
Let me know how you make out.

If you happen the forgot the router's password the only way around is to do a hard reset(hold the reset button at the back of the router for 5 to 10 seconds - this will wipe out all your previous settings) on the device but if you just need to change the default password to something different here's how;

Open an Internet browser(Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera, Safari) and enter the Wireless MAXg Router's IP address. The following is the default IP address of the Wireless MAXg Router:

You will not be prompted to login the first time you connect to the Web User Interface during the initial setup. During the Setup Wizard procedure, you will be prompted to create a user name and password to log on to the router. If you create a user name and password, you will need to use these whenever you want to log on to the Wireless MAXg Router. The user name and password are case-sensitive.

Go to the Security tab and now you can enter or change the username and password of your US Robotics router, you can also enable wireless security(encryption) like WEP or WPA on the Security tab so that you can properly secure you router against unwanted freeloaders/computers getting wireless access through your router.

Hope this steps would help you settings up your router if you have further questions regarding setup just post a reply.
