Disconnect all of the speaker wires and signal cables from the amplifier.

If the amp still goes into protect when you power it up, the output transistors are likely shorted.

I have a spl fx2 1800 that i got from a guy for 40 bucks and it is frozen in the protect mode is there a way i can get it to come out of the protect mode with out sending it in to the shop

The most likely culprit when an amp goes into protection mode is the power wiring. Check your ground wire, it should be solidly connected to the vehicle chassis in a paint-free location. Then check the live power wire and make sure it has a good connection. If that doesn't work, download the user manual from That should help you to decode why the amp is in protect mode.

Amp going into protect mode

If you set the gain too high on the AMP, at loud volume levels some clipping or distortion of the output signal will occur. Most amps have a Circuit inside that detects this clipping or distortion and applies protection to prevent damage to the speakers and the amp. It would help to know if you are driving the speakers with a Line level output or using the speaker output from your deck. There are many things that can cause an amp to go into protect mode, and knowing a little more about your setup will help to solve the problem.
