Back pressure at inlet when pump is turned off

I have a Jacuzzi pump/filter unit. I recently changed the sand in the filter and now when I turn the pump off, I get a back flow of water coming out of the skimmer intake which pushes the strainer basket out. I have very good flow on the outfeed when running.

There is a check valve in the output side -- sounds like this valve is jammed, clooged or broken. If the valve is not visible as a separate fitting, it's in the line, probably in an elbow.

How to use backwash to waste

When the filter get clogged the pressure in the filter increases and there is less water flow returning to the pool.
If your filter is a sand filter, when you turn the valve to backwash and turn on the pump it reverses the water flow in the sand filter to flush the dirt out of the filter to waste. Look at the window openning in the waste pipe and keep the backwashing goinging until you see clear water.
Then turn off the pump and move the control valve to Rinse, turn on the pump for a few minutes, this returns the water flow back to normal but the water goes to waste to make sure the sand filter is clean.
Turn off the pump and move the control valve to filter and turn on the pump. This mode is the normal operating mode and the pressure gauge in the sand filter will show a drop in pressure.
Some pressure gauge shows a red section to indicate when backwashing should be carried out.

Hi love ranch....
You have one or three problems.
1...Air leak on the suction side of the pump, loose filter housing, air leak at mechanical seal, crack in suction pipe, etc...check all suction piping for tight fitting fittings or glue joints.
2...Worn Pump...replace pump..(Doubt this one is your problem) unless you have a sand problem
3...Clogged intake filter...replace filter

My system has cracked two leaf trap lids in less than 1 month. When I turn the pump off it seems there is a lot of back pressure that is cracking the lid. What could be the problem?

- Too much pump for the filter
- Clogged filter / dirty filter restricting flow and building pressure
- Hose(s) too small a diameter
- Restrictions in or blackage of a return line
- Hoses connected to skimmer/inlet and return in reverse or incorrect order
- Problems with the filter valve not routing water correctly
- Bad pressure gauge misleading you on overall system pressure, again, clogged filter being the real issue

If it is none of those look at water chemistry being way off stressing the plastics or pool users climbing on the pump.

Sand in the pool from outlet

It sounds like you have a sand filter with a broken lateral or hub inside the filter. Unfortunately it requires removing all the sand from the filter to find and replace the broken parts. I would put new sand, #20 silica sand, back in after you finish the repairs.

I have an above ground pool with a jacuzzi pump. (1.5 hp). I just replaced the sand in the sand filter. I also put on a new o-ring on the jacuzzi pump cover. When I turn on the filter, the pump fills up...

I think you have a air leak. A 1.5 hp motor is very strong and should vacuum well. Be careful to not over tighten the top of your pump housing.

Is your impeller in good shape? It may be worth your while to remove the pump motor from the pump. While you have it apart, replace all the seals (there is a kit for this). Inspect the impeller and all parts of the housing - any junk inside? Remove it. After you complete the rebuild, reinstall the motor, fill the pump housing with water, secure the top and start the pump.

Let me know what happens ...

Help low pressure in pool pump and filter

I can relate so well to your problem. My pool is surrounded by pines and deodora trees... all the needles seem to find their way through the baskets, strainers and into the inlet of the pump. It became a daily routine of having to reach into the inlet and clean the debris if I wanted a filtered pool.
Here' s a solution that will work!
Purchase an extra debris scoop ...the kind you put on the pole and scoop debris from the bottom of the pool.
Cut the net out of the frame and wrap the netting around the skimmer's debris basket and secure it with an oversized rubber band or zip ties, then replace the basket back in the skimmer.
Your skimmer will keep the debris out of the pump!
This will make a world of difference in your pump's pressure!
Give it a try and see if you're not working better!
