Question about Sewing Machines

Machine stopped sewing

I was sewing a piece of fabric and the needle stopped moving up and down. The motor still runs when I use the pedel. When I tried to move the wheel on the side it's extremely tight, and had trouble turning it.

The thread is caught in the hook...Remove the upper thread and bobbin case, turn the hand wheel backwards and forwards by hand and remove the thread remands. Good Luck

How do I fix the mechanism for the needle. Needle barely moves and will not go down through fabric

If it is a mechanical machine, it most likely needs a thorough cleaning and oiling. If not oiled frequently, the old oil turns to a goo or varnish and prevents the parts from moving freely. Do not force the motor to try to run your machine as it will most likely damage the motor.

Might be best to take it for a standard service.

If you have the patience and time, you can try fixing it yourself:

In the future, be sure to clean and oil regularly (every 40 hours of sewing, every 6 months if not in use). Use ONLY fresh good quality sewing machine oil, applying 1-2 drops of oil each spot. Consult the owner's manual for instructions.

When I start to sew the machine will make a humming noise then I have to turn the wheel until I get through a stiff or hard part. Once I turn it enough then it will start to sew again.

Older machine?
Common, the motor is tiring. When fabric is too thick, the machine will labor to get thru the fabric. A good appropriate needle, Sharp Needle, will also help out this problem. But as long as you can manually assist, then you are still fine. Regular machine maintenance will prolong life of your machine.

Why is the needle not moving or feeding fabric but motor is running

the needle only sews,, it's the feed dogs in the needle plate area that feed the fabric thru the machine, if the feed dogs are in the up position then the machine will sew, if the machine is not sewing then the feed dogs need to be checked to see if the feed dog lever is up or down, look in the manual to see where the lever is and check it, if the lever up the then feed dogs will need to be checked to see if there is something's wrong with them at a sewing machine repair shop.

I have a Singer CG-550 and am sewing a heavyweight fabric using needle size 18. The engine whirs but the needle no longer moves up and down once it hits the fabric. It occurred suddenly, and I wonder

The motor may not have enough torque to force the needle through the fabric and back in a cycle. If you continue to force the needle into course material, it could bend the shaft, needle, or cause a misalignment of the needle pitch and direction. It sounds like the machine is a light duty appliance and you cannot force it to do commercial appliations.

Sewing machine motor will not run after attempting

Overload Viking:
The machine has a built in overload protector, if your needle can’t penetrate, it may stop the machine from working for a few minutes. Just wait it will reset automatically. Then, try a Sharp needle (denim needle is ideal) and be sure to Never Never reverse sew on heavy fabric, your needle will bend and hit the needle plate, use the FIX button for knotting (it really does work).

Sewing machine will not advance the fabric

Have you tried adjusting the tension as you sew?
Use a scrap piece of the same fabric, (doubled, etc to simulate piece you'll be working) and adjust the tension as you sew. Sometimes, that's all it takes.

Machine is slowing down

Either the machine needs to be oiled or the motor is going bad.Remove the covers and place a drop of oil anyplace that moves and rubs.( The ends of each shaft, the bobbin case area. The needle bar and the joints that allow it to move) Those kinds of places. Also look for thread that may be wrapped around a moving part and remove it.
Check the motor by loosening the handwheel clutch(as though you were going to wind a bobbin) and see if the motor still runs slowly when it is not turning the machine.
