Question about Pentax Optio S6 Digital Camera

1 Answer

Lots of noise lines in picture screen

My Pentax Option S6 is barely used, and now it gives a lot of noise lines on the LCD screen that will not allow to take pictures after a being on for a few minutes.

I am also getting pictures where the while color is pink.

Could it be a color or light sensor problem? How can it be fixed. Help!

Re: Lots of noise lines in picture screen

This is a fairly tipical sensor related problem. A sensor CCD or CMOS will use 3 areas of transistors, each of them managing a single elementary color (RGB - red green blue) in order to capture light and compose the picture. The white color is the most complex wave lenght color that a camera can detect. It will record it by combining all those 3 areas of transistors and balancing the amount of red green blue and their saturations to achieve a fairly good aproximation of the white color (thus a white balance model is used to help the camera to easier recognise a white reference point when taking the picture). If the white becomes pink this means that not all of the transistors were used when "reading" the light. If the pictures have too much noise or are difficult to take or see on the display of the camera, it also means there is a problem with the connections between the small transistors in the sensor, more exactly imperfect contact, a smaller control voltage than the minimum required and similar. However, in most of the cases, the sensor itself isn't the problem, that would be the small ribbon like cable connection that links it to the camera's mainboard. If this cable doens't make a good electrical contact with the sensor or with the other end - the mainboard, the signal comming and going through the sensor will be distorded or have missing components. That's the most common situation. Excess moisture, shocks or other factors may damage or weaken the mechanical contact holding the cable connected to it's ends. This should be checked out first, before asuming other causes for the problem. However this requires dissasembling the camera. While the exterior body of the camera may be taken apart by unscrewing some 3-4 screws, the lens assembly is a very fragile component. If it's not handled with care and some specialised tools it will break down, or some small servomotors may become loose. The actual sensor is located inside this lens assembly. It's a very small rectangle shaped object just underneath the back of the lens assembly. The cable running through that area must be checked by in a specialised service center as taking apart the lens mechanism is a very complicated job.

If you need more informations please reply with your questions.  or if you however want to do this yourself (once again, i think it would be very recomandable not to) i can give you some instructions on how to do this.

Thank you for using FixYa for your problem

Sounds like the LCD is faulty, but there are a number of things that can cause the LCD to play up too

Always check the batteries first (check that the voltage is correct with a volt meter) but if is it still giving the same fault, your camera is faulty.
It should be taken to an authorized repair centre for a repair estimate. Very few digital cameras have any user-serviceable parts.

Anything is fixable but it is more "is it cost effective"

Download photos from Pentax S6 to my PC

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program such as Picasa.

You should be able to turn the screen on while taking pictures so that you can see what is going on a little easier. Here is a link to the manual where you can find where in the menu to turn the LCD on. I tried to get the manual for myself so that I could give you page numbers and such, but it requires that i give a serial number number off the camera, so be sure to have your camera handy when you do this.

LCD screen 'flicker'

Try setting the video output option to NTSC (if it's on PAL). I know this sounds funny, but I have heard some rumblings about this option somehow creating a LCD flicker. If it doesn't work, I apologize in advance for wasting your time! My camera is on NTSC and I haven't seen any flicker on the file numbers on the LCD.

Pentax Optio 555 LCD screen blank problem

No I don't believe it is your shutter, more than likely it is a LCD Screen problem. I would suggest you take your camera back to the shop where you purchased the camera and have it serviced under warranty. I had a customer with an Optio 550 come in and it looked like every shot was taken through 'venetian blinds' and the problem was with the LCD Screen and the camera was sent back to Pentax and repaired under warranty.
