Gateway MX8734 crashed and will turn on for 1 second then die
I never had any problems with the battery at all and yesterday the computer just shut off out of nowhere. Now when I try to turn it on...
--the blue on/off button lights up for one second --the red plug looking light below the keyboard lights up --then it turns off again --meanwhile, the battery indicator on the front of the laptop is solid blue which usually means the battery is charged.
I've tried to take out the battery, connect the cord, and then turn it on and I get the same result. Is this a faulty motherboard or does this sound more like a batter/charger problem etc.

the Gateway MX8734 motherboard has two memory slots each capable of handling a maximum of 2gb of ram.
So, 2gb is the largest single ram module, and 4gb is the largest total amount of ram.
If you are uncertain if your motherboard is capable of handling a 4gb ram upgrade then check with the memory suppliers first.
In practice I have always found that the performance difference between 2gb and 4gb of ram is slight.
I had the very same problem with a HP Pavillion DV4 laptop and the problem was inside the battery - one of its cells became defective and the charge did not last more than a few seconds - it also showed a 100% charged icon but the battery was depleted in seconds.
Before buying a brand new battery you could check with a friend that has a similar laptop if he/she can lend you his/her battery for a few minutes and check whether the laptop keeps on or not with that other battery. In the case it remains on, it is the battery for sure, and you will need to buy a replacement one. Check the link below, for one option.
Usually because you didn't shut windows down properly before turning your computer off or completely draining your battery. If that is the case then simply select start windows normally and as long as you follow the correct shut down procedure it shouldn't happen again. If it does there may be a problem with your windows instalation.
Try to turn off the pc, then remove the cables and the battery. Then press and hold the power button for 5 seconds. Then reinsert the cable and battery on the laptop. Turn on the pc and check if it keeps crashing...
I have an MX8734 and it died on me. I have 3 batteries and 2 power adapters but there is a bigger problem at work here!
These computers (almost all gateways) have a big power supply plug (connected to motherboard) defect. They are a $6 part but the moboards are $400!
You can send it to a computer repair shop but beware,,, as some don't know how to fix plug and will tell you its the motherboard. Because its a defect it can happen again after repair. Gateway doesn not repair units anymore as acer bought them and a 3rd party is doing warranties (or not doing them from what I hear).
If I was you I would: A) Have a shop that can fix plug do it.
B) Put it on Ebay for parts (worth about $200),
C) Have a real expensive (but satisfying) target at the ol range.
i had a gateway and that happened. i had a bestbuy warenty. wat they did was replace the drive. if u buy a new one i suggest a hp or compaq cause when best buy replaced my gateway the hp seams to be reliable. dont buy from bestbuy
