Question about Freezers

1 Answer

Quit working I have a Frigidaire MFC09M3FW1 freezer that quit working. There is 115vac coming into the thermostat from the plug, and about half of that going into the relay area. Without schematics... I'm lost. Any help? Thank you.

Three post switch, but only two posts are used. There is no continuity between the used posts.

Still confused, appreciate your help and patience. Thank You.

If this is a bad switch, can I just bypass it?

The compressor should have a motor heat protect resetable snap switch called a "Klickson" located under a cover held on by a clip on the side of the compressor the klicks-on is wired between the motor relay and the compressor motor windings
start there check it with a meter for continuity
the cold control thermostat starts the compressor when the mercury vapor in the cold control bulb
attached to the evaporator calls for cooling so check it too and,let me know

the relay is a one inch rectangular or, square box the klickson is a one inch round plastic box

do not test the 3pin plug going into the compressor

with power on and, the cold control calling for cold:

close the relay manually with a nonconducting pen or, pencil or, jumper it

test the klickson for continuity it should be normally closed; there should be a small red button to push in to reset it

if it will not return to normally closed replace it

FREEZER quits working and if you unplug it and plug it back in will start working and work for weeks and may quit again.

If it has the control board on the door, they have been known to do that, it pressed/snapped into the door. If not and it has a manual ,standard knob on the inside, thermostat , slowly turn it back and forth to hear the clicking of the control which should start and stop the operation. If this is a self defrosting freezer and has the thermostat it also has a defrost timer that like a alarm clock shuts the unit on and off for 20 min intervals every 6 to 8 hours, this part has a little motor on it that overheats. You will be able to physically see oil comming out of it, or noisy ticking/ humming and very hot to the touch. Replace these parts and it should repair it. Good luck

FREEZER THERMOSTAT

Sounds like the thermostat is not working. Mechanical and electronic thermostats can go bad and cause the freezer to continue running no matter what setting is set on thermostat. When this happens the only setting that will work is turning the temperature setting to off. What is the model number on your freezer? Sea Breeze

Inside light bulb quit working the bulb is good but doesn't turn on when door opens

Hello Rick Cieri - From what you have described it seems like the unit could possibly be experiencing a wiring failure or communication problem coming from the main control board. Connect with a certified technician to accurately pinpoint any potentially more serious issues.

Maytag Freezer quit working, Light is on, but not cold. Is there anything I can check before calling a service center. The model is MQU2057AEW.

According to your wiring diagram this is about the simplest machine in the world to work on. a369c99.gifMounted on your compressor is a relay. The relay allows all the copper windings in the compressor to be energized momentarily to get the motor in the compressor started, then it drops half the cooper out because that's all that is needed once it is up and running. A thermostat allows current in the circuit till the desired temp is reached. I would check that relay first for signs of wear. They go bad with age. 46684ba.jpg743f4b2.jpgIf the relay is good bypass the thermostat's to see if she comes to life. If she starts working replace the thermostat.

It quit running and everything thawed. It's got electric going to the dial. plugged it in and can't hear anything running.

The power coming into the fridge goes to the thermostat and when it's time for cooling the thermostat tells the compressor and other components to come on so it has to be the thermostat..Does the light insinde the fridge work? If so i would replace the thermostat and it should fix the problem!!!

Frigidaire freezer not working

The thermostat may have shorted out so that it is no longer making contact to put power to the compressor. After drying out the components try bypassing the thermostat and see if it will start or make any sound whatsoever. If it does start and run with the thermostat bypassed replace the thermostat. 4-6 inches of water can also get to the relay on the compressor. Replacing the relay and over load assembly also be a good idea.

Frigidaire freezer quits running

actionsnax please remove the freezer from the GFCI. What is happening on this old unit is that if the compressor shuts off then tries to come back on before the pressure in the system equalizes, the compressor can pull 12 amps. This is normally higher than the trip point of the GFCI. I had this happen years ago with a brand new Amana SXS refrig, in that case no one knew the unit was on a GFCI. The manufactures require that this units not be on a GFCI.
Hope this helps
