Hi, I drive an 1999 Audi a6 2.8 have owned it for 3 weeks, drives well. Oillight came on last week, very surprised. Filled it on Friday is now Thursday of following week, oil level under half way, no obvious signs of leaks no smoke billowing out, occasional clouds of white/grey smoke when idling. Very depressed, have bought a lemon $12k. Any ideas ?
Your engine needs to be compression tested
I'm sorry to hear of your problem. Hopefully you'll find an only an easily fixable leak.
When you drive it get it up to 35mph and let off the gas for 20 to 30 feet or so, then punch it. If you see a large puff of white smoke it could mean valve guides. Also check your PCV valve. It could also be leaking when you drive so you wouldn't see it leak and could be a front engine seal or rear engine seal or both. If you don't have clouds when you're driving your rings may be OK but may need to do a compression check to comfirm. Hope for a bad valve cover leak. Good luck!

Thanks, any chance of this being a minor problem? Wishful thinking I know. Or show I take it to my local Texas salvage yard to be crushed (joking sort of).
Thanks again.
Many thanks for your advice.
