Question about Maytag Atlantis MAV8000

Open Question

Intermittent Motor Overload

Maytag MAV8000AWW -- The washer runs a cycle or two without incident. Then suddenly, at the start of the next spin or agetation cycle, the motor hum is abnormally loud and after about 10 or 15 seconds, the thermal breaker kicks out. The centrifugal switch appears to be in good condition, so I don't think the problem is a stuck-on starter winding. Also, the owner claims that the hum and shut-down have occured in the middle of aggitation and/or spinning (with the motor already up to speed and initially running normally). The mechanism, drum, and agitator turn freely by hand. Belt, pulleys, and motor slide mount/spring assembly all look OK. I suspect an intermittent mechanical problem (e.g., the brake occasionally not disengaging, something binding or jamming intermittently in the transmission, etc.). Is there a commonly encountered problem with this design that sounds like what I'm describing? If so, what parts are typically required? Thank you in advance for your feedback.

SOURCE: "howling" noise during spin cycle (still there after changing burned off belt)

Travioso, there was two service flashes out on this model concerning the seal and bearing which means they had an issue with this washer. The howling noise you are hearing is the bearing and will need the new designed triple seal and bearing kit. This should be covered under your warranty, I believe it is 5 years. The numbers for the service flashes are TDL-0048A-B. Call Maytag and inquire about these service flashes, these should be covered. Catriver.

Your Thrust bearing on the bottom of the transmission is not releaseing the break. try turning the pulley with the belt off in the opposite direction this should free up your break. If it doesn't replace your brake ststor and rotor as well as your thrust bearing. This should solve your problem. Roger

SOURCE: Washer will not agitate but will spin

You are correct that motor turns one direction for agitate and the other for spin. The problem you describe sounds serious but there is a chance it is not. First, try to turn the transmission by hand. If it wont turn by hand, remove the agitator and see if something has gotten under it and has it locked to the basket. To remove the agitator, pop off the top cap and look down inside. You will see the bolt that holds the agitator on. After you take it loose the agitator will slide off.

If there is nothing there, the transmission will need to be replaced. If the washer is less than 5 years old, the transmission may still be covered by warranty. Check your owners manual for warranty details. Post back to let me know what you find out.

Take the belt off the transmission pulley and see if you can turn it by hand. It will agitate on direction and spin when you turn it the other direction.
Put the timer to spin with the belt off and see if the motor will run. There may be a problem in the start switch on the motor letting it start in one direction but not in the reverse direction.
Special tools are required to remove the transmission and brake assembelies. You also want to make sure there is nothing sticking through the holes in the basket causing it to lock up such as a nail or screw that may have been left in a pocket.
Post back with what you find.
Thanks/Mike

Machine was overloaded and now the spin cycle will not work

hum check the belt if applicable, the door switch just in case co incidence plays out here, also may have a bad clutch or motor coupler, or worse case problem ur tranny. are u saying it still washes though? overload should not throw out ur spin cycle but can damage ur clutch and tranny? lest u have a digital electronic board on this machine and they are know to go bonkers. some machines actually have a auto fixit for overload or unbalanced issues.

What is the motor part number for maytag MAV8000Aww washing machin

The motor is part number PS2018261. (For a Series 10 machine. The serial number should start with "10".)

Finding parts or part numbers is easy. Go to one of a dozen parts sites (such as "partselect(dot)com") and enter your machine's model number. They also have exploded assembly views of the machine, which helps.

This sounds like the electeronic is faulty. Do this. Turn off the machine and unplug it from the power outlet for 5 minutes. Then plug it in and select a cycle. Make sure the water is on and try the spin only cycle first. if it wont spin only then there is a problem in the controller or the motor circuit. Thsi could be something simple like the unbalance switch or something worse like the motor or controller. ensuder the bowl is central. Pull the bowl to the centre. if rthe button you refer to is an overload button then the motor is faulty. A motor overload button measures the motor current in the neutral leg and if it is too great then it pops and stops the appliance.

Exessive noise when in spin cycle?

Could be dirty bearings. As long as it is still spinning, it is nothing to worry about. If it suddenly stops one day, it is probably frozen bearings or the brushes in the motor.

Washer wont run but is trying to

Sounds like the motor or capacitor (next to the motor), the capacitor helps the motor to start, once running a switch inside the motor disconnects the capacitor from circuit.
