DVD RAM not reading the DVD on a Toshiba Satellite A105 laptop

When I insert a DVD into the drive, I get an I/O device error. A couple of weeks ago, I was able to view a a certain DVD. I tried the same DVD today and got this error message. Under DeviceManager, I expanded the "IDE/ATA ATAPI Controllers" node and changed settings to PIO mode. Nothing changed. What else can I try? Thank you.

First open the "Device Manager" to check for any error messages related to the device and click on "Start" and select "Control Panel" .

Now double-click on the "System" icon then click on the "Hardware" tab and click the "Device Manager" button. A new window appears, and displays whether the device is working properly. If there are any errors, click the "Troubleshoot" button and follow the given onscreen instructions.

Check the DVD that you are trying to use to and ensure that it is free of dirt and scratches and the proper format compatible with your drive.

Now uninstall any drivers that may be on your computer from previous DVD drives.

Now download the latest driver updates for your DVD drive model from Toshiba website & install it.

Also check on Toshiba website that your machine has the minimum requirements to operate the drive.

Now restart your computer & check your DVD drive.
I hope issue has been resolved.

Did you try to insert other DVDs? if it works then the DVD that you are trying to play is faulty. But if all CDs cannot be read i suspected it's a dvd-rom drive faulty. you need to replace it.

If you have tried differrent cds but still the same problem I suspected it's your dvd-rom that is faulty. Send it to the service service and tell them that you need to replace your dvd-rom drive. If the machine is under warranty it's free of charge. If not, you need to pay for the part.

Make sure you have some softwear on your computer that plays DVD's...
If you do not then you can download a free player at the following website.

Toshiba Satellite A105 PC Notebook, DVD/CD Drive. The Drive is reading the DVD but not the CD. How do I change the settings for the drive to read both

You can't just change it from pio to udma. Go to Control Panel, System,Hardware,Device Manager, then expand IDE ATA/ATAPI, then right click on Primary IDE and select uninstall. Do the same for secondary IDE. Then just reboot your system, and it will autodetect all IDE devices. After that when you check, you should not have any devices in PIO, and your burner should work correctly. If not, stick it in a hyperbaric chamber for 2 days and see if that helps. smile.gif __________________

Take the laptop *and* your DVDs/CDs to a qualified technician.
It seems like the drive is "intermittently" failing, and needs to be replaced.
