Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

13 Answers

PS3 no video or audio signal. Help line failed. Soft start failed!

My PS3 worked yesterday but not today. It is not giving out Video or audio signal to the T.V.
When I try to link the controllers they just blink (all 4) as if trying to register with the PS.
I called  the help line. The Soft restart failed.
Red light on - press once(one beep), goes green then nothing else. Long press (10sec) one beep and returns to red.
The lady on the help line could not help me any further and now I am stuck. Can you help?
The software is 1.92 installed six weeks ago when I first got my PS3.

With a second attempt speaking to the Help line, the very nice Sony person said that there is a fault with the PS3 and are organising a replacement. The first time I phoned I must have had a Newbie!

Yup just happened to mine. Exactly as you described. Last night it worked, thismorning it doesnt. No video, no audio. Controller just blinks 4 lights. Can start it, and the fan spins, light turn green no beep error code, but nothing else. Holding down the power button and the power button + eject button do nothing. Really frustrating. And to top it all off, I purchased launch day 17th, and guess what... only 1 year warranty. Sony better pay for this crap.

    Hello everybody.

I have just been reading the comments following on from my original problem.

Let me comment on a few points. My Warranty was covered by Sony Europe. The PS3 was replaced within 10 days of collection after speaking to the people at the service Hot-Line. It was replaced with a NEW PS3 and my 2 year warranty is still valid. (Tip. Keep all of your paperwork)

Yes the HDMI to PS3 can be a problem for some people but that was not the issue with my PS3.

11eleven. In short, Sony only replace defective units. It is not worth their while to repair them. Overall it is about 1% of their market. The DOA units are later sold on to a private repair center. The repaired units are sold on to whom ever. The repaired units are not recycled back to Sony.

The HDD is removable and you can ship your PS3 with or without the HDD. But if your HDD is the fault then your replacement will also not work. Speak to the Hot Line!

Since I have had my PS3 replaced I have been a happy Expat! Finished Call of Duty 4, now playing Drake’s Fortune and waiting for my Assassins Creed to arrive!

Had my PS3 2 days and was ok on the 3rd evening turned console on and no signal could be recieved on any of my tv's or the 12 cables i tried of different origin, size and types failed to work. I have also gone through the manual numerous times and gone through the troubleshoot numerous times and nothing.

Looks like my luck has come round again a bust bit of kit again dont know why i bother.

    No signal, no audio ...

  • thaiphoang Nov 28, 2008

I have exact same problem. It is a 80 gb and worked fine just last night. It stopped working today for no reason ...
No video output , no audio , the controller blinks all 4 lights ....Tried everything (reset by holding on/off button, swap hdmi cable, replace with component cable) ...None would work. It's a few weeks over 1 year. It's out of guarantee. Sony sucks on this one.

    Hey everyone on this thread....

I would like to gather PS3 owners with this problem that would like to make a joint complaint to sony, and maybe make it public that sony is not admitting to this defect in their ps3 consoles. They are trying to charge us all $150 for their mistakes! Please, if you would like to give it a try, just email me your contact info at anazaral@uoguelph.ca. This problem is being called the green light of death... because all you get out of the system is the green light.... thanks for your time. I am definately against paying for this defective unit's repairs.

You have to go into the display options and change the resolution to 480i instead of 480p or higher

Since you guys have had this problem, and I'm currently running head first into this problem, I need to ask you if they fixed it or if they replaced it. I dont want to lose all my game data. Did they put all the stuff on your old HDD onto your new one????

It is the comunication between hdmi from the ps3 to the tv
if you unplug it from the console and reconnect it (when powerd on) it should do the trick

I just had the same problem with my PS3 through HDMI and OPTICAL cable.  Its not a problem with the cords or the inputs either.  it works through component, but I dont want component!
I already got a replacement because of it, and the replacement does the same thing right out of the box!
Flummoxed!

They will replace the unit you send in with a refurbished unit with a 90 day warranty for $150. No other option. Mine mysteriously came back to life, but now I am getting a ton of polygon problems. It will draw like 98% of the picture correctly, but then there will be weird sticks shooting out of everywhere because they are rendered wrong. This to me says the video card fried and now is very damaged. But if I send it in now with semi-functionality, or a year from now when completely dead, it is still $150. Sony warranty sucks ass.

Trying to get my ps3, Emerson hd tv and coby DVD938 home theater all to work together

The DVD938 only has analog audio input (2.1 channel), thats why you have only a white (left channel) and red (right channel) audio connection from your ps3 to the home theatre. There is an option called PROLOGIC in the setup menu that will simulate 5.1 with the 2.1, it basically takes the 2.1 channels and splits it into all the speakers.

You may just need to reset the video on the system. The link below will help you do this by putting the system into recovery mode.

Inputs of signal are not being recognized my tx-sr607 anymore

The intended function of connecting video on most receivers is to take advantage of the on board digital video processing to upconvert the signal in attempt to improve the picture quality. However, it still is always best to connect any picture producing device directly to your television in your case...the PS3 video output is not in need of any upconverting. Modern televisions of most manufacturers of LCD, Plasma and DLP and their variants can upconvert video to their native resolution automatically, depending on the video input used. Most televisions on the market today can upconvert component video input resolutions of 480i/p to 720P or higher for example.

As for the malfunction of the remote, there may be some signal interference. The PS3 has an on board wireless internet connection that is very powerful. Try moving the PS3 farther from your receiver.

We just bought a ps3 yesterday, it worked last night to watch a movie and then we got a new tv today and it gives audio but no video.

It sounds like since you need to try resetting the video settings. When switching between HDMI and AV or changing TVs, you can get a blank screen. Try these steps to reset it:
1. Make sure console is turned off completely(red light in front should not be on)
2. Hold down power button and then turn on back power switch.
3. Listen for first beep
4. Listen for second beep
5. After you hear the second beep let go
The screen should appear. And remember, this will have to be done anytime you change TVs or change between HDMI and AV. Hope this was the problem and that it helps.

My ps3 is turning on but my tv says no signal on AV1,2,and 3.

You should start with a manual video reset.

While th PS3 is off, hold down the front power button until you hear two beeps, then quickly release. This will reset your video back to default.
