I changed the black ink in my printer. I continue to get this message. I cannot run a test and I have checked several times to make sure the cartridge was put in correctly. Although I have had this printer for about 5 years, I haven't made that may copies. I purchased ink only 3 times. I cannot see paying HP $150 to answer my question. Any suggestions?

Locate the STOP/RESET/RESUME button on your printer which is represented by a triangle within a circle on the body of your printer and is usually in red, white or black as pictured below. With the reset button located hold it down for at least five seconds and then release it.
Your Black is empty and the printer is trying to approximate the Black using the other colours. Check and replace Black.
Your Black printhead is blocked and all you are seeing is the other colours that are used to make the black into a full black. Check cartridge and do a printhead clean to see if this clears it. Also print off a print quality test sheet (In the Ink Management options on the printer)
Another colour has been put into the Black Slot on your printer. Replace the incorrect cartridge and hope that the printhead has not been damaged by using the wrong cartridge. May need several printhead cleans to clear incorrect ink from the feed lines.
The Lexmark x7170 should let you continue printing with the ink cartridge regardless of the estimated ink with most cartridges. The only exception to this is if the cartridges are part of Lexmark's returns programme. I would advise removing the cartridge and checking for small text stating "Return Programme Cartridge" on the label. If this is present sadly there is no way of continuing, apart from buying a new cartridge.
With regards to the low ink estimate, am I right in assuming you are using a refilled or remanufactured ink cartridge? If so this is unavoidable but should not prevent you from printing until the ink physically runs out.
If you are using a photo cartridge, in your case the #31 cartridge, insert that in the left carrier where the black cartridge is. Make sure your color cartridge is inserted in the right carrier to continue printing.
I purchased remanufactured ink cartridges through amazon.com. I got 4 for the price of 1 through Dell. After installing the first cartridge, it printed for a few days and then I got the same message "left cartridge incorrect". Unfortunately, I did not read the piece of paper that came with my cartridge that says "STOP" read this before you install the cartridge.
I had to throw out the cartridge that I had just installed and put in a new one and follow these steps:
1. If you recieve a pop-up message indicating that the cartridge has been depleted or a low ink level warning, please disregard.
2. Check "Don't display this dialog again" and click "ok" or "continue printing" if necessary.
3. In the printer status window, since you have already ordered ink, do not click the "order ink online" button. If you have the option, check "I have ordered my ink, please don't remind me again." If not, close the window and continue printing.
I'm not sure why, but these instructions were vital to getting my remanufactured cartridges to work.
I am posting this reply to hopefully help out the next person that has this problem. Unfortunately, I lost a perfectly good ink cartridge because I failed to read the instructions the first time. But the next one worked just fine when I followed the instructions. Good luck!
The microchip in the cartridge has alerted that the cartridge has run out of ink. Only way to fix it is replace the 31 cartridge with a new one (I know that is a bummer, but it is what needs to be done)
exchanged the black cartridge (57): the printer told me there was a problem with it, that I should remove it and re-insert it. I did, the ink button still blicks. After several efforts the printer started to work again, printed one document and then told me there was a problem with the colour cartridge. I removed it, re-inserted it several times. Finally a test page was printed - everything was okay.
Then the printer refused to print anything - the yellow LED lamp blicks continuously. Have turned the printer on and off, have also shut down the computer and re-started.
The only thing that will work now is the black cartridge, if I remove the colour one.
The remaining levels of the following ink cannot be correctly detected. Color The following ink is running low. Black Prepare a new ink cartridge. The resulting print quality may not be satisfactory, if printing is continued under this condition. If either black or color ink cartridge has run out, you can set the printer to continue printing with the other cartridge from the Ink Cartridge Settings on the Maintenance tab of the printer driver. ----how to resolve it email me: email@example.com
