the player will read all other discs fine and it was intialize and record DVD-R without a problem will not finish inializing DVD-RW it does start to count down from 2 mins but after 15 seconds immediately jumps to the end and sits with the word Initialize on the display for an indefinite period of time using Memorex DVD-RW

ya I was typing and thinking at the same time I am using Memorex DVD-RW not Maxell it was a 5 pack so I tried ALL the dics and none of them will successfully initialize ... how does one update the firmware with this I have read throught the manual and maybe I am missing the instructions somewhere

HI thanks for the reply and I appreciate the link ... unfortunately I am not tech literate so here are the problems 1) there are pages of firmware downloads with no real clear cut indication as to which one I need to use or download and 2) I really don't know how to get the firmware onto the actual machine

It appears this is a common issue, and you will need to update your firmware.. Unfortunately, i cannot seem to navigate the Sanyo website to find your particular model.. Also Noted, The device does not seem to work well with Maxell Discs.. there are several posts all over the internet about this issue..

Look through your documentation to see if there is a support website listed, and check there for any possible firmware updates..

Sorry i could not be of more help.

Problem - You put the DVD recordable media in and it takes about 30 seconds before it identifies the disc and says Initialize Disc?

You click OK and it takes the full 2 minutes only to stick after 2 minutes and do very little but spin. Disc will not eject unless power is removed first.

Disc will read DVD's ok.

Solution - Clean the lens with a cotton bud and Isopropyl Alcohol very gently. Shine a flashlight onto the lens to see if the reflection is clean. If not the soft wood of a match stick with a small piece of clean silk can be used to rub the lens with as little pressure as possible.

The DVDR should read and the initialize, although it says will take 2 minutes, should jump to the end quickly and the DVDR+ sign appears in the corner.

(My problem first occurred after some painters were sanding in the house and the machine got full of dust, but the clean did not last long and it turned out there was a smudge on the lens which you could not see without the flashlight. Once it was removed the recorder was back to working order.
if cleaning the lens does not solves then ,its necessary to get the lens replaced. this will help. thanks.please do rate the solution.thank you for using fixya.keep updated.

I'm unable to find DVD discs that will record in my machine. I was using Maxell DVD+RW 4x but am not able to find them. If it says "up to 4x" it will not work. If I buy Memorex 4x, they won't work. I saved...

I have found that the DVD recorder in this unit will not recognize a DVR+R disc greater than 8X speed. Therfore 16X discs are not an option. Like you already know, it likes DVD+RW 45X speed discs but it is selective. I have been using Maxell DVD+RW 4x and have found that Verbatim DVD+RW 4X and Sony DVD+RW 4X work just as well.

I have an error 25 on my dvd recorder

Technically, E25 is a copy-protection error, but I have some additional background on this issue. On the one hand, it could be a legitimate copy-protection error - you are trying to record from a copy-once or copy-protected source - this is especially true if you are trying to record from a Cable/Satellite Box that has a DVR box - since copying to the DVR is considered the first "copy," the Magnavox will not allow you to make a "second" copy.

On the other hand, Magnavox/Funai players see all programs recorded in V mode (as opposed to VR mode) as "copy-prohibited". It records all +R discs in VR mode automatically, so the solution in this case would be to record on a compatible -R disc (or vice versa).

There are two simple fixes for this issue in either case:
1) If you are using a +R disc, switch to a -R disc. If you are using a -R disc, switch to a +R disc. Simply switching the disc type will "fix" Magnavox recorders (long story).
2) If your TV has a "Video Out" or "Monitor Out" (most TV's don't), you can connect a yellow video cable from the OUT of the TV to the Video IN on the back of the Magnavox. This will permanently resolve your problem by fooling the recorder.

Here is additional info about the type of disc to get:
IDiscs that have been tested and are proven to be compatible with this recorder:
VERBATIM DVD+R 8x, VERBATIM DVD+RW 4x
VERBATIM DVD-R 8x, VERBATIM DVD-RW 2x, MAXELL DVD-R 16x, JVC DVD-RW 4x
IWe strongly recommend for good recording quality:
TDK DVD+R 4x/8x/16x, SONY DVD+R 4x/8x/16x, MAXELL DVD+R 4x/8x/16x, SONY DVD+RW 4x,
MAXELL DVD-R 8x/16x, MAXELL DVD-RW 4x

Good Luck!

Initializing DVD-RW Discs

This camcorder only takes DVD-R and DVD-RW, it will not work with the +R discs. I've used Maxell and Fujifilm discs and they both worked fine. You have to make sure the camcorder is plugged in the wall when initializing or else it won't initialize.

MiniDVD+RW can not be recognized

The Canon DC210 will only work with 'minus' format DVDs. It will not work with 'plus' format DVDs.

When you use DVD-RW discs you will be able to initialise the discs.

Don't forget to rate this solution once you've tried it.

Formating problem

Are you using dvd-rw(+) or dvd-rw(-). Have you tried updating the firmware? http://www.emersonaudiovideo.com/pdf/om/EWR10D4.pdf Minus (-R/-RW) and Plus (+R/+RW) The formats endorsed by the DVD Forum (www.dvdforum.org) have a hyphen in their names and are verbalized as "DVD Minus R" or "DVD Dash R" (DVD-R) and "DVD Minus RW" or "DVD Dash RW" (DVD-RW). The competing formats from the DVD+RW Alliance (www.dvdrw.com) use a plus sign: "DVD Plus R" (DVD+R) and "DVD Plus RW" (DVD+RW). Starting in 2002, drives that supported both Minus and Plus formats were introduced. Make sure you are using the proper dvd disc. Let me know what happens. Good Luck, Tim
