Question about Craftsman Garden
Drive cable on my Craftsman self propelled lawn mower either snapped or came loose. Mower is a Sears 917.376080. Manual just says to replace it with no instructions.
The cable runs above the deck until the drive cover. I see where the outside of the cable is attached to the mower but cannot take it off. Also cannot even guess where the cable would connect.
Any help greatly appreciated!!

Tip the mower up on it's side with the dip stick tube on the lower side and dump the oil out. Best to run the mower till its out of gas first.

Take off the cover up front on the self propel. Engage the self propel and make sure your cable is not broken. If that is ok then remove the wheels and inspect the molded cogs on the inside of the wheels and make sure they are not stripped out. If they are stripped go to www.sears.com and on the tool bar click on parts direct. Under model number enter yours and it will take you to a parts diagram. Get the part number for the wheels and go to local small engine parts dealer and get new. You can also do a search on the web for the wheels and maybe get them cheaper.
Good luck and let me know if this helps or you need any more help.

check the mechanism first before changing the gearbox its possible that the cable might jump out from the pulley or the cable is worn out or its possible that the gear on the tire is worn out to if not then that would be the time for you to change the gear box it would be hard to change it if you don't have the right tools to work on it if you know how everything work its not that hard to replace it just make sure were everything goes memorize the parts before disassembling cause that would be you guide to reassemble it...goodluck
