Unfortunately this is a quite general problem today as we are washing more and more in rather low temperatures. Gunk and slime packs up in the rubber gaskets and elsewhere in the machine, smells horrible if not kept under control.

There are a few things you can do.

1) The most important thing IMO is to make sure to wash at the highest temp at least once a week, 90-95 degrees Celcius.

2) Always leave the washing machine lid half open when not in use in order to allow the inside to dry.

3) A supplementary thing is to run an empty machine wash cycle once a month or so using bleach (chlorine) in the recommended dose for your machine. Use highest temp to maximize effect.

There is also some work that can be done with a rag, mechanically cleaning out the gasket and all accessible parts in the detergent compartment etc, however this may have quite limited effect. Worth trying nevertheless.

Good luck!

Other than that you c

I was going to say it could be a good idea to complain to the place where you bought the machine and/or to the manufacturer,

I'm sure they can come up with systematic solutions that are built into future machines if they are forced to do so. It will not help you in the short term though, I don't believe there are any brands or models that could be singled out as being much better than others here.

As I said, there are a few things that can be done to keep the problem under control.

How is it going for you, OP? Did yu find the suggestions useful to solve you problem? Maybe you already tested it all? Please give some feedback or people like myself will be much more unlikely to take the trouble of posting potential solutions in the future. No feedback, no learning, no fun.

I have suffered the same problem with my Hotpoint front loader and although I gave it a good clean, pipes as well it still had a bad smell. Use a water softener tablet or a stain remover occasionally and it keeps it away. Hope this helps.

My washing machine smells bad . There is grime stuck between the rubber boot and drum . How do I fix this

Make sure you are using HE detergent. Non He detergent can cause a mold smell because it does no dissolve and builds a film in between the inner and outer tub. You should probably run a washer cleaning solution.

My LG front loading washer smells like wet clothes that have been in the washer for months? Musty smell?washer overnight? Strong smell of musty old clothes

This is caused by the biomass built up inside the tub of the machine. This can also be caused by a moldy door boot. You need to scrub your door boot between the tub and the door. Water settles in the bottom of it and molds. Once you clean this, order affresh washer cleaner for your machine. This kills all the biomass built up in the tub and removes the smell. You will put all three tablets in the drum and run on the longest hottest wash available. When this is completed your machine should smell much better. To keep this from getting so bad again... Keep the washer door cracked open between cycles. This keeps the inside from smelling. Hope this helps

Washer smell

If this is a front loader, clean around the rubber "boot" inside the doorway between the front of machine and the drum by pulling out a little to reveal buildup behind it. This can get a funky smell. You can also run the "sanitary" cycle if your unit has one, with bleach, which will clean the tub better.

It is usually down to a bacteria build up between the drum and the tub. The majority of appliances that suffer form this have been used mainly on 40 degree washes and with a biological detergent.
The best way to get rid of this smell is to place two tablespoons of washing soda or soda crystals in the detergent drawer and then run the appliance empty on the 90 degree wash. You may have to repeat this treatment several times before the smell goes but it will go eventually.

Water remains in tub after spin cycle

Have you tried to clean the drain hose on the back of the washer? It may have build up inside that you are loosening up by using bleach.

My Maytag washer has a defect, technican told me, that lets water get between the tub and outer lining and sit there and stagnate smelling terrible.

The water always goes from the tub to the outer shell, that is where the pump connects. Put a little bleach in the tub with some water, shake the agitator side to side to move the drum enough to circulate the bleach around the tub. Then pump the water out and then lower the hose down to a bucket to get the last of the water out. Feel around between the inner and outer drums for anything that has jumped out of the inner tub to the outer drum. You should be able to push the inner drum aside enough to get your arm in. You may have to open the top to get your arm in the space.

Law Suit

I don't know anything about a lawsuit with LG but the proper solution to this is to have a qualified LG tech disassemble the washer drum and tub assembly and wash it down with a garden hose.  Once it is cleaned out, the smell is gone.  To avoid the smell from returning, do not put more than 2 tablespoons of detergent per wash.  The reason is that the washer can produce excessive sudsing and line it throughout the tub.  The front load washer cannot rinse this excess suds off by itself and will in time, cause that nasty odor again.
