You are very correct.you are not the only one facing this problemthere are many facing this problem.and yes its the problem of amplifier ic that is connected on the main board .that goes faulty.and due to this the sound stops working,even though the speakers are proper.as the amplifier is the part which controls the sound in speakers located on main board.
you will have to take the help of local tv repair technician as this part is not available online and company has stopped manufacturing this part for sale.but the local tv techs have the compitable part which can come in use of your tv part.
