Question about Hayward H Series Induced Draft Abg 100,000 Heater

1 year old hayward h1001d pool heater clicking

Our pool heater seems to be clicking and shaking after we turn on the heater. Checked filter and pressure - starts up fine, heats water, but clicks and shakes.....need help! Should we not run the heater while it is shaking? heater fires up and within a minute starts to shake & crackle like it is air bound. i think i bled the filter&pump the same as every year

The clicking is probably a check valve opening and closing -- the shaking is probably air being sucked in from a loose connection on the inlet side of the pump. The air is causing the check valve noise.

I would not run it until it's running properly.

If you could explain the hookup, I might be able to help you find the problem (valves, pumps, lines, connections)...

Actually, the clicking is likely causing the shaking. Inside the manifold of a H100 is a stainless steel diverter plate that send some of the passing water into the heat exchanger and lets the rest past and back to the pool. When it breaks, you will hear a 'clicking' noise at it rattles in the water path. When it breaks, the flow to the heat exchanger is intermittent and you will begin to boil the water, causing the shaking. This situation is dangerous, especially without a pressure relief in the heater or pipe. As long as your water chemistry is sound, Hayward will usually cover this under warranty even if the unit is over a year old. One of the internal safeties are opening causing the main burner to shut down. Ensure you have proper water flow through the unit. It may be a high limit tripping and can be caused by several things, one being the limit is weak, second the heat exchanger may be partially plugged from scale. You may be able to determine the cause if your mechanically inclined, but I would recommend professional service.
