Dell notebook L400 Will not boot

My Dell Latitude L400 boots up to the Windows XP screen and that shuts down and reboots over and over and over and over.... It does not read external CDRom (plugged into the back) or a CDRom USB, or a USB flash drive. How do I get it to load a new OS? thanks david

U can try USB drive (copy the OS there), some virus block the booting process, or some hardware crash...the bad possibility broken memory (of course u have to change it with the new one...:)
still, with USB drive u can only install it, not too format it
or try to format the harddrive in another computer, but first, back your data up..

good luck,

Are you seeing a blue screen before shut down, could be corrupted driver. Boot into safe mode (press f8 at start up) then try doing a system restore to a date it was ok.

Dell Latitude D410 - OS won't boot only after a few minutes

Seeing that both OS's (Windows XP and Ubuntu) are having a problem booting up, I also think the problem is with your HDD. I think you have a pretty good idea about computers from your use of terms :) There may be some corruption with the HDD. I would check that out first.
Good luck with your problem and thanks for using FixYa.com!!

Dell l400 problem

1.If you purchase an external USB CD drive you will not need to use your floppy discs for booting. 2. You can connect a USB CD drive to your system. 3. Your system will recognize any device plugged into your USB drive. 4. There is no CD drive available for internal installation in your computer. 5. With the USB CD drive plugged in and the windows installation disc inserted, your computer should take you through the setup program automatically.

Booting problem

Try putting the computer into safe mode by holding down on the F8 button and selecting safe mode during the boot process. Once you get to the safe mode screen and windows appears, restart the computer.

If that doesn't fix the problem you will have to restore Windows.
