I need a drawing of the leverage mechanism that lifts the guard on a 10" Mastercraft Miter Saw. My guard doesn't lift anymore and nothing is obviously damaged or bent, but there is a very large gap between the roller and the guide it strikes to lift the guard when the saw is in the up position.
This is a MASTERCRAFT saw, not a Makita. It is listed here because FixYa doesn't have a Mastercraft section.
I have a friend with exactly the same problem.
Mastercraft (Canadian Tire proprietary brand) uses some weird klugy sytem to move the lower guard inside the upper guard. No other manufacturer seems to do this unnecessary nonsense, and the thing is a mechanical mystery with some strange counter-intuitive geometry (you know, like a Bendix brake self-adjuster).
I stared at this thing for an hour today and still have no clue how it is supposed to work, just that it doesn't work the way it sits now. It's like the whole thing rotated out of position at some point, and now won't go back. There is a spring, but only one obvious attachment point for it. When I got to this one, the other end of the spring was just hooked to a tang on the same part, and did nothing.
the guy needs a drawing or a picture of a properly-assembled mechanism. For that matter, so do I!

Unplug tool and manually lift the guard up and then try moving the head up and down, if it moves freely there is a link bar and also the center plate on the guard that are worn, you can try smoothing them out and spraying some dry lube on them. If it is still hard I would try spraying some penetrating/lube on the pivot assembly. Lastly make sure the guard is plate is tight against the hex nut. Let me know if you need more assistance.
loosen the guard screw, UNPLUG tool first, move the guard out of the way, there is a spindle lockon the backside of the gearcase push it and slowly turn the blade until it engages and then remove the bolt, it is a left hand thread. DO NOT disassemble the guard, just loosen bolt and move out away from blade also you need to have the head in the raised position.
Do you have the wrench that came with the saw? It should be slid in the back somewhere, there is a lock on the top that you hold the motor locked with, unplug the saw, turn the nut on the blade, start the saw down and grab the guard with your thumb to hold it and then lift it up all the way to slip the blade out. You should be all set.
OK first raise the cutting head. Loosen the screw that holds the guard in place and move out of the way. Find the spindle lock on the right hand side of the gearcase and turn blade by hand (UNPLUG SAW FIRST) until it locks. With the wrench supplied with saw put it on the blade bolt and turn it clockwise to loosen, it has left hand threads, remove outer flange and blade. Let me know it you need any more help
Hi Luigi
If you have all the parts and screws you can use this diagram to help re-install the guard.
-Place the guard in position first and snug the the mounting screw.
-Place the lift bar making sure the curve points upward and is attached to the guards mounting plate as shown in the diagram
and snug the screws.
-once all the screws are snug test to see if the guard operates properly then tighten all the screws and bobs yer uncle
-That's Aussie for your finished.
Good luck.
Lift the guard up and you will see a nut holding the blade. You should not have to remove guard to change blade. Make sure unit is unplugged before working on it.
