Ademco 15P Check Fire Alert

Hi, I have an Ademco 15p system that was working great until some basement renovations. Now the Check Fire alert keeps coming on all the time, I have replaced the basement smoke detector and checked all of the wiring and everything seems fine. I have unplugged and cycled the system three times, within 10 minutes the Fire Check alert comes on again at the keypad. Any ideas?  Thank you, Dave

Check means it is not seeing the smoke detector. This usually means a broken wire or even a nail or staple through the wire. Does the smoke detector use two or 4 wires?

The "CHECK" condition usually occurs when there's a "high resistance" on the wire (over 2300 Ohms (2.3K on the multimeter)). The resistors have a 10% tolerance (+/- 200 Ohms) at manufacturing so that really only leaves a 100-Ohm gap. It's not much, 100ω can be obtained with 300-feet of perfectly good (yet very thin) wire.

Get out a multi-meter (or Ohm-Meter) and set to whatever range 2.2K-Ohms would fall into, remove the wires from the panel terminals and check the resistance across them (the zone wires). The smoke detectors are usually a "normally open" circuit which closes in the alarm state, so you should only be reading the resistance of the wires and the EOL resistor combined (assuming the EOL resistor is AT the smoke detector between the two zone wires). This figure should NOT be over 2200 Ohms (2.2K). If it is, you can test it at the resistor and see if the problem is the resistor being no good, if the resistor tests near 2000 Ohms then it's likely the wires...

ALSO!!! Check to see if option 174 is turned on in panel programming, it could just be sending you a "clean me" reminder! (that simple eh? sometimes!)... Check the manuals on how to reset the timer as I can't think of it off the top of my head... Kinda like the oil change timer in a car, they DO have to be reset, changing the oil alone won't reset the timer *(I always hated that)..

How do I program zonig for my Ademco 6148 pad

The 6148 keypad is a fixed english keypad. It is possible to program your system from a fixed english keypad, but it is very difficult. an alpha keypad shows text descriptions of the programming fields. The model number is 6160. If you are doing your own programming, I would suggest replacing the 6148.

When programming, you're programming your alarm panel, not the keypad. The keypad is just an interface to the panel. If you have a tan box in your basement or a closet, that is your panel. There will be a sticker on the inside of the door of the panel that will tell you the model of the panel at the bottom. It will say Ademco Vista 10, 15, 15P, 20, or 20P.

From there you can go to the link below and find the installation and programming manual for your panel.

Hope this helps.
