Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

To repair or not repair or can we do this ourselves?

This was purchased in 1999.  When watching the tv the tv would shut itself off.  You would see the on and off switch blink off and on.  If you turned it back on, the tv would come on and then shut off again within a few minutes.  Eventually it would not turn on anymore.

Prior to this occurring, it looked like the tube might be going out as kind of orange/brownish blotches on the picture began to appear.

We have had this happen about five years ago and had the tv serviced which cost $400.00.  Because of its age and possible service costs, we are wondering if this is something that we might be able to repair ourselves?  We downloaded the service manual from this website but it looks pretty complicated.  Any suggestions?

Thank you,

Jamye

Without the brand and model number it is hard to say for sure, but you have a high voltage draw on the board somewhere. This is complicated to check and in many instances you need specialized equipment to check different components, not to mention the dangerously high voltages involved. You will need to be very familiar with soldering small joints on a circuit board once the problem component is found.

If you are not familiar with television circuits or have a friend that is that can be there to guide you I strongly advise you not to try to repair it yourself.

That being said, the cost of any kind of electronics repair on a television will probably be $500 or more. If the board itself has to be replaced, it is probably no longer available due to the age of it. Most boards are no longer available after about 5 years because the technology is increasing so fast.

My reccommendation with the information you gave is to replace the set.

Hope this helps.

Thanks/Mike

TV shuts itself off..red light blinks 7 times.

The 7 blinks usually indicates a high voltage shutdown situation. Without the specific model, I can;t give you details about parts etc. The options are a defective flyback transformer or problem with the voltage regulation circuits. Please update this with the model number and I'll post additional details as soon as I can.

Thanks,
Dan

Since your plasma is less then a year old, I would suggest to contact the manufacturers to get it fix under warranty. If the plasma keeps shutting off by itself, that is not normal and should be repair.

CAN IT BE FIX?

Sounds like a bad horizontal transistor and flyback transformer . Do you know how to unsolder and or solder ? If so you might have a chance . If no the avg. to get repaired is around $90.00 to $130.00 so shop around as some shops will charge more . The parts you could buy your self for around $30.00 to 40.00 . Good luck and if you think you could fix let me know and see if i can get you part numbers .

RCA 32 in TV no picture no sound just a beeping noise TV power is on

Hello cote,

This indicates a problem in the power supply either the low voltage switching supply or the High voltage power supply. The sounds you hear is the shutdown circuit activating, I would not suggest that you try to repair this problem because of the dangers involved. I would suggest that you take it to a qualified TV repair shop. This problem should not cost you much, however it is the best choice for the problem you described.

I hope this helps,
Thank you,

Problems with the DVD of Hitachi 46W500 46 in. TV/DVD Combo

These units have prepritary DVD units and cost anywhere from $30 - $200 for a replacement. If the cleaning disc didnt work more than likely its REALLY dirty or the pickup itself has malfunctioned.
