I have a kenmore model 110.20957.991. The machine will not agitate. I have determined the agitator dogs are stripped, but can not figure how to get to them. I have removed the fabric softner cap, and have located the agitator dogs. My old Kenmore had a bolt that unsrewed - that allowed the agitator to be pulled up, and allowed access to the dogs. My current model does not have a bolt/screw. I can see where the dogs are not engaging; however I have not figured out how to remove the ''cover'' which holds the dogs or will alow access to replace them, which is inside the agitator. Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks, Joe

Re: agitator dogs stipped
The way to do this depends on if it is a dual action or triple action agitatior. dual action - Remove fabric softner dispenser -pull off plastic cap with flat blade screwdriver - bolt is under plastic cap 7/16" triple action (bounces up and down) remove fabric softenr and plastic cap with a 1/2" drive socket extention, put into square hole and unscrew spring assembly. once unscrewed top portion of agitator will come off

IT could be the agitator dogs that are chewed up and not gripping like they should. I am including a link to the Sears parts direct website so that you can see what they are. Second link is to a video on how to change them.
This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.
First, see the Sears parts site for your washer: http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action
Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.
If the bottom agitates and not the top, the problem is likely the 4 "agitator dogs" designed to allow the top agitator to turn only one way.
Look at the section on the Sears site for Agitator, basket and tub.
See the part "Dog, agitator "
Remove the fabric softener unit, lift the top agitator cap (use a screwdriver) and you should see a plastic part in the center of the top agitator with a 1/2" square drive. (I've used a 1/2" adapter for a 3/8" socket drive)
Remove the drive and lift off the top agitator. Turning it over you should see the 4 "dogs", replace these and the top agitator should turn in one direction only.
Replace the 1/2" drive, the cap and fabric softener unit and the top agitator should work.
Also see the following illustrated description of the above.
how old is the machine? agitator dogs in agitators have only been used for the past 15 or so years. sounds like you need to take the agitator out and replace the 4 dogs in the top of the agitator. not a costly repair.
probably just what is known as agitator dogs just worn ..with no brand or model i assume it's a whirpool or kenmore ..1st remove softner dispenser (without brand can't say how it would come off ..some twist off some just pull off ) if agitator has cap underneath pull it off in center of agitator should be a bolt 7/16 if kenmore/whirlpool..remove it pull up on top half ..whole thing may come out if so just pull up sharply on top part..center part of top half comes out dogs are on it( 4 )again i'm assuming kenmore/whirlpool whirpool part # 80040 replace them and reassemble ..if any other brand will probably have to replace entire agitator..good luck
could be worn agitator dogs try turning upper portion of agitator by hand and listen for slight rattle or motion in both directions if dogs are bad remove cap and center bolt pull upper part of agitator off dogs are in ceter of upper part ..part number 80040
